Supper/Dinner Time! What's on the menu ?

Different reasons
Some people go veg'n without really wanting to give up meat. It's solely a decision based on ethics. They want to replace the animal products with plant offerings as close as possible

Others don't miss me at, and don't really want to replicate animals, but do want different textures and like the same seasonings that are traditional in meat based products.

Sausage, bacon, ham.... those don't taste like meat, they taste like seasonings and smoke.
I make seitan, and balked at calling it 'chicken', for the one with typical poultry seasonings. Or 'beef', using the deeper beef seasoning. I tried calling them 'white' or 'dark' seitan, and what response did I get after explaining them to people? "OH, so it's like chicken (or beef)!!!!

There was a low fat trend years back when turkey was used for ham, bacon, burgers. So many people didn't like that, saying it wasn't XXXXX if not made with the traditional meat. Look at today---they're still there, and accepted. Some day plant foods will be also be accepted as the base.

I will say I hate when things that are so clearly plant based get called be meat names. Like 'toona, or chik'n, salad . It's chickpeas.

This always brings to mind a date I was on where the guy said he'd bring chicken to a picnic, and I'd bring sides. I expected a bucket of fried, he brought boiled chicken parts. Literally, just boiled, chicken pieces! I have never in my life wanted to replicate just meat :rofl:

Oh yeah, the daikon medallions. I find I always need to explain my foods. Like I'd call them sauteed daikon, but people looking at it would recognize a meaty thing, so saying daikon steaks may work better
Thx for the info and I appreciate your detailed explain… I did sort of figured that it was more of a psychological thing, rather than a whim… I have bought veggie ‘burgers’ and veggie‘ sausages’ In the past, until they became too exy… which begs the question, ‘isn’t it more expensive, buying these processed vegetables???
 
Yeah, I’ve noticed that, but why call veg after animals!!! So, I could call my veg mix, ‘lamb stew’, yikes…

I call stews by the name of the main ingredient, i.e. lentil stew, bean stew, vegetable stew, courgette stew etc. Many dishes are plant based as it is. This reminds me of a friend who said that there was no such thing as a lentil stew! She went on to say that stew had to contain meat. :unamused:

Personally, I don't call plant based dishes with a name of an animal. The only exception being is when I eat a shop bought product that is called 'no bacon' 'no ham' or has 'sausage' in the title because it would be misleading when explaining what I ate.

Even when ordering in a pub/café, if the name of the dish is 'brisket of beef', I will ask for seitan and not call it 'beef'. Moreover, I've noticed that many omnis pick up it and think that vegans must be missing out by not eating animals.

When I hear 'vegan fish', it seems very strange. Is the fish vegan or is the dish vegan? :eek:

The can be more expensive, but there are others priced like meat things. I make my own seitan, but do love the Impossible sausage and burgers> I loved Beyond but they're now avocado oil which makes my sick :unamused:. I'd say I buy like every couple months when I see a sale

Yeah, I’m quite surprised by how tasty some of the veg ‘meats’ are… Occasionally, at a whim, I’ll lash out and enjoy something differently delicious.

Haha, maybe it’s contrived that way and you think the dish is vegan, but it’s actually processed ‘fish’… “wow, this really tastes like the real thing”…(cause it is)…lol. Thx for that link too, interesting. Also, apart from greens, I guess the mainstays in my stew are either lentils or sweet potato… Funny thing, I never see sweet potato vines/leaves on sale!!! Very tasty and nutritious, imo.

I went to Unity Diner again today to have the roast dinner for the first time. I tried the vegan turkey and some of my husbands chicken. I had it with roast potatoes, parsnips, carrots, peas, cabbage, leek gratin, cauliflower cheese and stuffing. I couldn’t finish it all!🤣

Hmm, maybe it’s the white sap…perhaps people think it’s poisonous, but it’s not…
 
Now that’s my style. I mostly do veg with noodles, but gotta order those soya curls…

I've had a bag in my fridge for soooo long. I just never want to make them. Last time I made the same jerky recipe I used to like, I didn't like it as much.
I had a sandwich with my seitan, my mayo that was half olive oil (and super good!) and pickled onions. I also made potato salad

I am too embarrassed to tell you what we had for dinner last night - suffice it to say that neither of us ate much (him nothing) during the day so my 'breakfast for dinner' plan kinda went out of control - there were breakfast beans involved, as well as grapefruit/banana slices and leftover potatoes hash w/mushrooms, bell pepper, jalapeno and onion and I am leaving out all the rest....
