Supper/Dinner Time! What's on the menu ?

So last night I tried a daikon radish steaks. I got the Japanese recipe from YouTube. The radish pucks get scored on top into grid, which gives a nice presentation and then precooked in boiling water or veggie stock before pan-searing them to a beautiful golden colour on both sides. I will definitely makes these again. Absolutely delicious!

I just saw somewhere the other day. It was either on Facebook or at a restaurant in London.

Sounds amazing! Daikon radish is my favorite veggie to eat raw and dip, but I always hesitate to buy it because I only see such big ones.
I'll have to look this up--I'm thinking like the watermelon "steaks"?

As for why they are called steaks, as per Merriam-Webster dictionary.

d: a thick slice or piece of a non-meat food especially when prepared or served in the manner of a beef steak
eg. tofu/portobello steaks or a cauliflower steak

A mole style black bean & sweet potato chilli with avocado plus a huge sprinkle of Tajin.
I gave my pal downstairs two huge portions and she really enjoyed it.

Artisan ww toast with Applewood.

Apple puree with soya cream.

large acorn squash halved and placed upside down on a cookie sheet - same done to a large sweet potato, a beet and 3 yellow potatoes - all baked in the oven - an Apple Sage Sausage w/colmans mustard each - oatmeal cookies for dessert

I love roast vegetables and always deglaze with balsamic vinegar just before serving.

I actually used malt vinegar on the potatoes and some brown sugar in the squash. Tried to avoid butter however my honey wanted some garlic butter so he dumped a teaspoon on one of my potatoes grrrr .

Balsamic sounds like a great idea also.

People have different tastes 😀 and I like to balance out the sweetness of the squash and add smoked paprika. :grinning:

I always drizzle with evo before roasting and finish off with balsamic. It was one of my late cousin's favourite dishes when I cooked for her.

I agree, sometimes they are massive. In looking for other ways to try daikon I stumbled upon a Sauce Stache recipe for daikon bacon. He's pretty convincing, so I will give this a try tomorrow.

Thx for the explain and vid… never too old to learn and I’ve never seen or heard of such huge radishes

You can call them either medallions or simply sauteed daikon.

Many people still call plant based food 'chicken', 'beef', 'ham,' 'steak' etc. I think that it's a question of what you find to be acceptable.
Yeah, I’ve noticed that, but why call veg after animals!!! So, I could call my veg mix, ‘lamb stew’, yikes…

Different reasons
Some people go veg'n without really wanting to give up meat. It's solely a decision based on ethics. They want to replace the animal products with plant offerings as close as possible

Others don't miss me at, and don't really want to replicate animals, but do want different textures and like the same seasonings that are traditional in meat based products.

Sausage, bacon, ham.... those don't taste like meat, they taste like seasonings and smoke.
I make seitan, and balked at calling it 'chicken', for the one with typical poultry seasonings. Or 'beef', using the deeper beef seasoning. I tried calling them 'white' or 'dark' seitan, and what response did I get after explaining them to people? "OH, so it's like chicken (or beef)!!!!

There was a low fat trend years back when turkey was used for ham, bacon, burgers. So many people didn't like that, saying it wasn't XXXXX if not made with the traditional meat. Look at today---they're still there, and accepted. Some day plant foods will be also be accepted as the base.

I will say I hate when things that are so clearly plant based get called be meat names. Like 'toona, or chik'n, salad . It's chickpeas.

This always brings to mind a date I was on where the guy said he'd bring chicken to a picnic, and I'd bring sides. I expected a bucket of fried, he brought boiled chicken parts. Literally, just boiled, chicken pieces! I have never in my life wanted to replicate just meat

Oh yeah, the daikon medallions. I find I always need to explain my foods. Like I'd call them sauteed daikon, but people looking at it would recognize a meaty thing, so saying daikon steaks may work better

I'm having a deconstructed Beyond burger Whopper/Big Mac, a la Cheap Lazy Vegan. So I cooked the burger, and then chopped it up and put it in a bowl with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and pickles and drizzled it all with a vegan mayo-based special sauce I made. It's quite delicious! Oh, and I am having a side of potato chips, just a few, lol.
