Juicy Marbles steak was on offer in Tesco. £6 instead of £8. I felt it was time to take the plunge. I had it pan fried with boiled potatoes and peas.
Taking it out of the packaging is unnerving. That meaty lump with its white sinew and blood staining the packaging is totally reminiscent of raw meat. I kept forgetting that I didn't need to worry about cross contamination!
Objectively it's delicious. Slightly irony taste and fibrous texture that was like very tender meat—closer to braised steak than fresh steak. In that sense I think the product's consistency is better because unlike real steak, you'll never get a tough one. Cooked, I think most would be able to distinguish between JM and real meat, but on its own some would be fooled.
But I've got mixed feelings. Previously I was all for these substitutes because 'nothing died', and that's very true, but as I've got older and subs have become more realistic it's started to feel like I'm advocating snuff movies instead of slaughter. I totally get that it's cruelty free, it's a step in the right direction, and that there's no denying that many of us like meat but object to it—I still couldn't help but feel a bit of an idiot :-/
