Supper/Dinner Time! What's on the menu ?

Thinking about it a lot of UK people now say "fries" instead of chips and "slaw" instead of coleslaw and "corn" instead of sweetcorn.

I'm going to make breakfast for dinner tonight - vegan sausages, bacon, tomatoes, hash browns and baked beans. Toast as well, probably.

With re to 'fries', it may be because 'dirty fries' are very trendy atm. Everyone that I know, still calls them chips. Slaw is a term mainly used for grated vegetables served as a salad. I think that coleslaw would also be grated cabbage with a sauce i.e either mayonnaise or vinaigrette. I've never heard of the word 'corn' being used for sweetcorn. I also call 'hash browns' rösti. Crisps are still crisps with the exception of tortilla chips.

The English language and culinary terms both change and evolve.

I don't know what I feel like having for dinner tonight. I might make chickpea cutlets and have that with colcannon and roasted carrots.

We mostly say corn, but sometimes the stores will have signs that say sweet corn. We call the yellow/white corn "butter and sugar," and then there's sliver queen corn, which is all white. But we just say we're having corn on the cob or just corn.

I just made chickpea cutlets-I forgot how easy and good they are! I need to mash the chickpeas better though. I simmered them in broth.

Dirty fries, dirty chips or loaded fries are chips/fries with melted cheddar, various bits and pieces and may also have gravy added to them. This dish is very popular in pubs and fast food places.

we had gnocchi last night with onion, garlic, mushrooms, zucchini and a can of white kidney beans and spaghetti sauce

What are dirty fries?

They are called Cri fries at the last pub I worked at, the sauce was carbonara sauce mixed with the same amount of mayonnaise, warm it gently ,do not boil. Pour over the fries sprinkle with cheese if desired , if you use cheese pop under the grill to melt the cheese slightly. They are wildly popular.

I follow two British YouTubers (Those Happy Days) who were in Canada and tried (obvs vegan) poutine recently. They said it was delicious.

Chips/fries with toppings and sauce but Poutine looks quite different to dirty chips/fries. This dish seems to be soaking in gravy. It's strange that we were never offered this dish during our stay in Quebec. Chips with gravy is also quite popular in the North of the UK.

I made some dirty chips/fries last night; boiled and then air fried chips topped with crispy smoked tofu bits, melted Epic Violife, a sprinkle of cider vinegar plus chopped avocado. If I had been in the UK, I would have included some vegan sour cream.

Poutine in my area is fries topped with meat and gravy. It never appealed to me. I like my fries just seasoned. In Philly, cheese fries are very popular. I tried them once before I went vegan and didn’t really like them. My favorite way to have fries is with a little salt and malt vinegar.

Same here as I don't like gravy with chips. Last night's dirty chips was delicious as it has just the right amount of toppings and melted cheese and the chips were crispy.

the original ingredients for poutine are just fries, cheese curds and gravy and then people get creative and add just about anything

last night we had a Soyarie Herba tofu burger as a hot sandwich with boiled potatoes and lots of gravy, some sauted onion and mushrooms - the final piece of our blueberry cheezcake for dessert

I also like malt vinegar--I really loved Five Guys fries! Haven't had them in years, too darn pricey for potatoes even as much as I liked them.
Costco actually has a big bag of fries that are super good in the air fryer. My son used to make them a lot which how I know. It's like a five pound bag
