There's a twitter account that retweets homophobic tweets.

Rather disturbing.

There's a large level of just plain stupid, such as this one:

"I don't like gays (sorry if you're gay) but the Bible says it's wrong to be gay. Not that I believe in God or the Bible, but yeah."

WTF?

And the hate-filled bigots... How do people, young people, like that even manage to exist in today's world?

Its beyond me in the 21st Century why people are still bothered by gay people.
I have read arguements (sorry to say mostly from Religious types) saying that the Bible says this that and the other about gay relationships and also that men and women are meant to be together because they are meant to procreate. But this arguement is moot when you look at the fact so many Hetro couples choose not to have families. Its so stupid.

Im quite amused by people quoting the Bible, then following it by saying they want to kill gay people.

Ummm Thou Shall not kill ring any bells.

HUH? That has to, HAS TO, be a troll.

Edit: It was tweeted by Manda Swaggie, a.k.a. Amanda Bieber, an internet-famous troll. So we can sleep easy on that one, at least.

The few times I've had arguments about gay marriage from a religious angle, and they've said it's against God's will to be gay and so gay people shouldn't marry, I've asked what they think of atheists marrying.

When people quote the Bible as being anti gay, they are really cherry picking what they want to believe.
I wonder how many of them have cheated (adultry) or wear blended fabrics, which is also a sin in the Bible. There are more but I cant think of them of the top of my head...

Tattoos. Ham sandwiches. Gossiping. Remarrying. Doing anything other than worship on sundays. Women doing anything, including speaking in church. Seafood. Sex before marriage. Football. Pulling out during sex. Wearing gold.

And about a hundred others.

On the topic of gay marriage.

One of my (ex) friends was against gay marriage because it was forcing Christians to do something they don't agree with. Even when I say what about only civil marriages, not religious ones and he say it didn't matter because marriage was still a Christian institution regardless of whether it's performed in a church or a registry office.

Now this guy is an atheist. But he is determined to get married in a church because it's traditional.

I ended up walking away. There was no possible way of dealing with that level of fail.

Well, I think there's a difference between being uncomfortable with homosexuality and being against homosexuality.

True, but "homophobia" has come to mainly refer to anti-gay beliefs rather than fear or anxiety. I don't know if that's how the term was originally coined or not.

Meh, nobody cares about what Paul said about women.

That's why I rarely call people who hate on homosexuals "homophobes", well, the reason for the hate may be related to fear as well, but that is hard to tell.

I'm not a big fan of the word either, but I find myself using it sometimes just because it's so common.

It seems silly at this point make a fuss over the etymology/original intent of the word homophobe when it's clear from common usage what it's supposed to mean.

I somewhat agree, but it can create confusion at times. For example there was a study supposedly showing that 'Homophobes are more like to be turned on by gay porn', but in the study they defined 'homophobe' as a measure of fear, anxiety or uncomfortability around gay people, not whether they held anti-gay beliefs or attitudes. Many people just read the headline and interpreted it the wrong way.
