Been watching the impeachment a little bit. I find the videos captivating. but my main take-away is, what are we going to do with these tens of millions Trumpers. Maybe without him cheerleading they will calm down. but I'm not optimistic.

I'm not optimistic, either. I think the Dems are mainly putting their case out there for the midterm elections. Getting the 17 Republicans needed to convict seems like an unlikely scenario, given that people like Ted Cruz are already claiming that the House managers haven't proved a direct link between Trump's speech and the storming of the Capitol. I do like how the managers laid out Trump's campaign to maintain power beginning in the summer of 2020, with his ridiculous assertion that if he lost, the election must have been rigged (but if he won, it wasn't -- makes no sense!).

The way he phrased it was that the ONLY way he could lose is if it was rigged.

I liked the way Jordan Klepper put it, something like, you think its surprising that a president who never polled over 40% lost?

The ongoing problem is that a lot of those senators come from red states and something like 70% Republicans believe that Trump won. For many of them, voting to impeach would be political suicide.

Oh, I know. I was paraphrasing, but I guess I wasn't precise in my choice of words. :D But yes, way too many people believe his lie that the election was stolen from him. The thing is, those Republican lawmakers who don't believe the lie also don't seem to have the courage to set the record straight with their constituents, probably out of fear of losing their seat in Congress or their lives, given what happened on Jan. 6. It's a dangerous time to be a lawmaker.

Listened to quite a bit of the House managers presentation, thought that they did Such a good job...
Tried just now to listen to trumps defence team - they are So horrible that I had to turn it off...

Listening to the trumps defence lawyers closing arguments had me Yelling at the TV!
They were So much like trump himself, constantly twisting the law and out right lying...
Most of the time not even speaking about the case, deflecting, comparing BLM protests to the insurrection, insulting the House managers...
It doesn’t matter that the Senators heard all of this because they had already made up their minds...
What matters is that trumps base has heard all of this and they don’t have the discernment to understand what happened in the trial...They will just remember the lies and unfortunately trump will be a victim in their eyes...
This truly sickens me - 57 guilty to 43 not guilty - 7 brave Republicans, just not enough to convict him...

Morality vs. grocery shopping: Would you shop at a grocery store (or any other type of retailer) if you knew they supported and contributed to political causes and politicians you yourself don’t support or agree with? Some people are wrestling with that right now.

Trump will likely be the next republican president of the US. No great defection from the republican party has occurred over the events of early January, this would indicate that the majority of their membership at least support the actions of insurrectionists and in fact it seems to have steeled his minions support, he likely will will the Iowa caucus which will give him a definite advantage to regaining what he's lost. Iowa will support him, after all Steve King was a congressman for years, despite being at minimum a lunatic right winger and open supporter of new nazism. The only reason he didn't win the primary in his last re- election bid is because he'd been stripped of his committee assignments because of his open support of white supremacists. He was no longer able to represent his district, that's why he lost, not that the party faithful were aghast at what he said, did, or supported.

Trump will likely ....
There is little doubt in my mind that even if Trump does not serve any jail time, he will spend most of the rest of his life as a defendant in numerous court cases.

As of right now republican voters are less than half of the voting population people in the US. and depending on the poll, something like 30 - 40% support Trump or his policies. (although I have seen one poll say 70% that seems to be the outlier - but even if that is true that still is a minority.

Democratic voters may have never been more energized. The Democrats fully understand how important it is to maintain control or the the House, Senate and White House. I expect they will do anything and everything to maintain that control.

Republicans may have never been more fragmented than ever before. there is even talk about a split in the Republican Party. A split can only benefit the Democrats.

We were seeing this on a much larger scale even before. Law firms that have defended Trump have lost clients. Big stores have dropped My Pillow. Whats-His-Name on Fox was cancelled.

I have no issue with boycotting or shunning companies connected to Trumpism.

I don't agree with any stores, if you can name an anti-establishment retailer I'll buy from them.

Sorry (not really). I saw this on line just now and I just had to share.

I think Ted Cruz is desperately trying to rebrand from the "inspired a deadly insurrection" M*****F****** to the "left my constituents to freeze to death so I could go to Cancun" M******F*****, but luckily he can be both. He is just that big a M*****F****

I was quite pleased to hear that Ted Cruz flew to Mexico. I think this is the kind of thing that affects how people vote and this won't be fully forgotten about even in 4 years. Ted Cruz won the 2018 senate race only by 50.9% to 48.3%. Hopefully this will hurt Ted Cruz if he runs for senate (or President) again in 2024.

I wish I shared your optimism. People tend to have short memories, and all he has to do is raise the "specter" of Socialism, and the Republican voters will be scared into voting for him again.

That state is like Georgia. they are getting more blue by the day. This power crisis could turn into a story about corruption, mismanagement, and short sightedness. People of Texas might want to see some changes in their political landscape.
