You can get really cheap deals for some of the above items at Poundland and the other good value High st store Wilko's ( can't remember the name) for cake tins, stands etc. Lidl's also have really cheap prices for baking tins and containers.
Lakeland also have a great selection of baking stuff with lots of special offers. Even Sainsbury's & Tesco's have cheap cake stands and mixing bowls. I bought a cake lifter for around £ 2. I think that the new more modern Christmas cakes which are decorated with marzipan and icing on the top look far better than the traditional style ones.

Thanks - I was looking at a lot of these places already :) I especially love Lakeland, although it's not cheap. I went in and made a huge list of baking equipment I eventually want though :P Also Homesense, they have a lot of higher-quality things at good prices. And amazon has been a big help, you can get most things for cheap there.

Some of the super-cheap things from Lidl etc. aren't suitable because I have to make sure the equipment meets certain food safety regulations, but most of it works. It still adds up though, which is why I decided to start small with basically what I already had, and expand if the demand is there.

And I love the look of those little christmas cakes!! I might give something like that a go :)

I bet you've looked everywhere !!!!! It's always fun to look for kitchen especially baking stuff. I spend hours looking for new items when I'm in the UK and US.

I also like Lakeland's and will treat myself to an item when they have discounts. You really can find everything there.

I also thought of a giant gingerbread man cake which would appeal to children during the Christmas period. It would be really easy to make and decorate. They sell the tins on amazon. co uk.

I'm really excited for you and can't wait to read about your adventures. This reminds me of the story that is behind the Gower Cottage Brownie firm which now seems to be huge.
The founder was a stay at home mum who lived in a cottage in Wales. She started to make fabulous brownies for some extra cash and sold a few at the local bakery. They were so delicious that customers started asking for more…… Finally she went to the Good Food Show and met a celebrity who fell in love with her brownies. She now has expanded her business (still from the Cottage) and her husband also works full time with her. She also sells them on QVC co uk. I'm a regular customer and always send a box for gifts to my family on a regular basis.

Welcome to Gower Cottage

Go, Aery Go…….

I wonder whether this is a misconception as Lidl's electrical appliances and homeware are of very good quality. I have
never encountered a problem with any item that I have purchased. I don't think that by law they would be able to sell baking material if it didn't meet the EU regulation safety standard. I bought a very sturdy and quite large cupcake container and carrier for 8 € the other day. It is an excellent product for storing and delivering small cakes.

Having said this, I don't like giving them publicity as our Lidl's over here have appalling cs and their staff are so unfriendly. Their prices are always wrong and you end up having to complain at the check out. This really bugs me when I shop.
I basically have to force myself to shop there because of the deals.:p

Safety standards for commercial baking are a lot stricter than for home baking - for example, I'm not allowed to use wooden equipment, because it's not considered 100% disinfectable. It doesn't mean it's not safe. I've taken a few courses recently in food hygiene and safety (because you kind of have to, you need to demonstrate that you have all the required safety knowledge and an accredited course is the best way to do that), and I've had to order some new equipment as a result (plus a separate fridge and stainless steel shelving unit and storage containers for all the dry goods).

Yes, I gathered that S&H is really important. I have some former forum pals from a cooking forum who had to apply. One of them has now started a successful baking business and one also bakes from home.

You are right about wooden stuff. It's obvious that you can't really disinfect it as well as plastic or ss.

This is my little bakery:

I'm so in love with it! :D All the dry ingredients are stored in plastic tubs, separated by allergen (so gluten-free stuff away from gluten, etc.). Anything which needs to be chilled is in a separate minifridge. And I've got a few more bits and pieces on the way in terms of equipment. WHEEEE! :woo:

That is so impressive and awesome!

I like your overall theme. It's so cute and happy. If I lived nearby, I would definitely stop by to visit (and that's not just because I know you on VV!). Congrats on your new business.

A TOTAL STRANGER ORDERED CAKE :woo:

She found me on Facebook and sent me a message. My first ever official order is from someone I do not know, and who knows nobody I know. I never in my wildest dreams thought that would happen - I thought that if anything, I'd be taking occasional orders from friends and family for ages before someone random got wind of me and decided to order. But she's ordered, paid, and will collect a batch of cupcakes this weekend!!!

I did a Lakeland trip this evening :P had a little baking disaster - the cupcake cases I bought (which were a reputable brand) were awful, they went see-through and greasy, they smelled of chemicals, and they were so thin that they collapsed on themselves. So I went to the last place I got decent cases - Lakeland ;) more expensive, but so worth it.

... I may have also treated myself to a couple of new pieces of bakeware, as it was buy one get one half price :P

I'm sorry about your cupcakes. I usually buy them from either Sainsburys, Poundland or the 99 ct store and they have always come out fine. Lakeland really is the baker's ali baba !!! I may treat myself at Christmas as they have quite a lot of special offers.

Please let us know about your baking adventures. It's always so much fun to read about someone starting a cooking business from home.

It all worked out in the end, the new cases were spot on and I got the batch finished :)

Wow they are gorgeous. How do you make the icing ? Do you mind telling me how much you charge per cupcake ?

It must be a great feeling of satisfaction to have baked your very first order.
