Literature What are you currently reading?

I read a sci-fi/dystopian novel called "The Last Day" by Andrew Hunter Murray. He is a well-known British writer and comedian and this is his debut novel. A catastrophic event in space causes the Earth to stop rotating. It takes a few years, called the Slow, then it stops entirely. Chaos happens of course and Britain is the last place on Earth for survivors. Really good book! Political intrigue, murder and mayhem and a twist at the end.

I put a HOLD on it so it should come soon - I noticed there is another by him called Sanctuary although it is not currently available.

I read "Service Model" by Adrian Tchaikovsky. I think it came up on one of my suggested lists. It is a dystopian, social commentary sci-fi novel with a robot as the main character. It is full of humor and satire. I thoroughly enjoyed it! This author has a long list of books and I will be looking for more to read.

this one arrived and I am reading it... so weird!!! I keep thinking I am going to stop reading and then another line pulls me back in - hilarious too

I'm reading Friends Indeed by David Weber and Jane Lindskold. Character driven SF.
It's part of the Star Kingdom series which is part of Honorverse.

Basically the further adventures of Stephanie Harrington and her Tree-Cat Lionheart.

5 stars.

If you are enjoying "Service Model", I think you would like "Klara and the Sun" as well.

Yesterday I read "Spare Room" by Andrea Bartz. This is a psychological thriller that I couldn't put down. It takes place during the pandemic. The storyteller is Kelly, a 34 year old woman who has been planning her wedding, when her fiancé states he wants to postpone it. Kelly is devastated as she has her whole life planned out in her head. She decides to give him some space and goes to stay with a high school classmate she re-connected with on social media. Sabrina is now a famous romance writer, married to a government employee and living in a mansion. Then things get weird as Kelly is drawn into a lifestyle she is not familiar with as Sabrina and Nathan ask for a threesome. There is a lot of Kelly's struggle with trust and love and then she finds some photos of the former live-in lover. Lots of lies and secrets make this a good read.

Thank you, I have placed it on HOLD.

Service Model is really incredible and touches on a number of current thoughts and trends especially regarding 'justice' - one line that stood out "travel changes you" - it is so true and I did a lot of travelling in my twenties and thirties especially to the arabic countries and south american and europe and it definitely changes you. I am so glad that I stuck with reading it as it made me think so many different things!! Thank you again for recommending it.

Today I read "South of Nowhere" by Jeffery Deaver. This is the latest book in the Colter Shaw series which is now a TV series. I like the show and didn't even know it was based on books. This is a page turner that I finished this afternoon. Colter Shaw is a tracker (which is the name of the TV show) who finds missing people. This story involves sabotage, murder, and some family drama. I liked it and will find the other books. It was pretty cool being able to "see" the characters after watching the TV show.

I read The Psychopath Next Door - Mark Edwards. Hmm, I didn't think it was that good. I have really liked some of his earlier books.

I put that on reserve at the library. :) I have to stop buying books and looking for them at the library instead!

Today I read "Sunrise on the Reaping" by Suzanne Collins. This is the newest book in the Hunger Games series and I had to wait a long time for it. It is really good and very disturbing as is to be expected. It has been so long since I read the earlier books and watched the movies, that I had to look back at the Hunger Games to see the timeline. This one is about the 50th Hunger Games so precedes the first book by 24 years. It is the story of Haymitch Abernathy, a character I totally did not remember. If you like this series, you will like this one too! Now I want to re-read the others! LOL

I just finished Nora Roberts latest novel called "Hidden Nature." It was a really good thriller with psycho serial killers (some stuff was really disturbing) . It is about a woman Natural Resources police officer and her family. I didn't know this branch of law enforcement existed so that was interesting. There is romance too, of course. Good read!

yahoo, it arrived early, a "skip the line" and so I am about 1/4 way through - enjoying it so far as I do all of her books, thank you for the recommendation

I read We Solve Murders. It's by the author of the Thursday Murder Club. It was very good.

And I've started the Murderbot series.
My brother recommended the "Murderbot" books to me. He said it was really good. I have yet to read it though.
