Do you think taxing meat and dairy will result in lower consumption? Do you think it would help in bringing about an end to animal food consumption altogether?

I thought this petition makes a good point:

"According to a news article published in late 2017 the global livestock industry causes 15% of all global greenhouse emissions, furthermore the over consumption of meat in the UK seriously damages health and is associated with hugely elevated heath care costs.

Excessive meat and dairy production damage both health and the environment. We call upon the government to tax their consumption along the lines of tobacco, alcohol and the burning of fossil fuels.

A meat and dairy tax wouldn't result in lower consumption here because it would never, ever happen! Those lobbies are too powerful. Heck, here people are not even aware of how much impact those industries have on the environment. It's all "let's do solar, let's do wind" never "hey, let's cut out cheeseburgers!"

I suppose without any tax-funded healthcare for everyone, you can't use the argument that a person's meat eating is wasting your tax money due to the ill health and burden on health services it can bring.

You don't have to tax meat (or dairy) to make it more expensive, and reduce consumption.

Simply pull the subsidy the government provides to these industries, and the cost of meat and dairy will jump significantly.
