News Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine

I keep forgetting about this thread.

I'm sure those of us who watch TV news will have heard about the recent spectacular Ukrainian attacks against Russian strategic bombers and AWACS planes parked outdoors on several airfields across the Russian federation; the so-called operation Spiderweb. They transported shorter range drones inside wooden crates and parked them near the airfields. Once they were all ready, they released them all, remotely and simultaneously. They claim the drones were operating fully in AI mode when they attacked, but also utilising the local phone networks.

The high estimate is 41 aircraft, but lower figures were 10 - 12 or so, if I recall correctly. I've seen video footage, but it's hard to say because of course the drone footage ends every time it explodes, so we can't tell if it makes serious damage or not.

Another question is the extent of western or probably specifically US involvement, e.g. in providing satellite images to help the operation.

Anyway, the operation will probably go down in history as one of the first successful major AI-aided military attacks, even if the true scale of destroyed Russian aircraft was less than first claimed. But especially if these claims are true.

(I probably spend far too much time watching and thinking about this war.)
