Literature What are you currently reading?

I'm starting Ten Seconds on the train ride today.
I didn't start this book as I read that it was the third one in the series and so I just donated it to a charity shop when I was in Brighton.

I have a library book to read today. I forget what it is called!

Today I finished "The Dark Hours" by Michael Connelly. This is one of the Renee Ballard, Harry Bosch books. It takes place at in early 2021 which is during the pandemic and is referenced often. The Jan. 6th insurrection is mentioned as well. It's a good mystery with Ballard and Bosch hunting a pair of serial rapists.

I read "The Horsewoman" by James Patterson and Mike Lupica. This is about the world of equestrian show jumping where the competition is intense as the riders from all ages, genders, and walks of life strive to go to the Olympics. Mr. Lupica is a sports writer whose daughter is such a competitor so the story is probably pretty authentic. There is no murder and the only crimes are related to immigration issues and a rich guy who always gets his way. The story surrounds the Atwood family of 3 generations of horsewomen. Mother and daughter are competing for a spot on the Olympic team. It was a good book with lots of family drama and information about a sport that really doesn't get much press.

I am starting this tonight. Then She was Gone.
Tear jerker ending.

I messed up and ended up with 4 books on hold and 2 that I had out this past couple weeks. I returned the 2 and picked up one. So 5, down one now. 4 of my insane library mess up to go.

Almost done with The Hallmarked Man. This is the 8th book in the Comoran Strike series by Michael Galbraith (aka JK Rowling).
It was very long. The mystery was very convoluted and there were so many character that my poor old brain had a hard time keeping it straight. I would have been better if I was reading it as an ebook where I could look up names and bookmark clues

But really great. Might have been the first mystery I ever read where part of the mystery was the identity of the victim.

I understand there might be another 2 books in the series. The Robin / Strike romance is still unresolved. No big surprise there.

I'm trying to find the DVD for the previous novel, the Ink Black Heart. I know the TV show is out on HBO and BBC One.

I made a big decision yesterday that I am never ordering another book from Amazon. I went to a local bookshop to meet a local author and get my books signed and I was talking to the man who worked in the shop beforehand. I am going to go and buy my books there or at another local shop that a woman in my book group told me about. :) Or buy from charity shops or pick my books up from libraries/free libraries.

Just finished "Nightwork" by Nora Roberts. It is the first book of hers that I have read that has a male main character. It is the story of Harry Booth who at nine years old becomes a thief to help his family survive when his mother gets cancer. The book covers decades as Harry gets really good at being a "cat burglar". He is very very smart and changes identifies frequently and never stays in one place for long. I really liked this book. It has thrills, great characters, and romance.

I read another Colleen Hoover - Without Merit - a moving and haunting novel of family, love, and the power of the truth. Not every mistake deserves a consequence. Sometimes the only thing it deserves is forgiveness...

it was intense and yet lots of humour and joy

Today I finished "Shadow of the Solstice" by Anne Hillerman. This is the newest in the Chee, Leaphorn, and Manuelito series. These are always a good quick read and this one is based on a real crime being committed on Native Americans. It concerns a scam regarding Medicaid. Alcohol and drug abuse are a huge problem on the reservations and the scam involves enticing people into a non-existent program to collect the government money. There is also murder and a cult. Good fast read!

Just finished "Obsessed" by James Patterson and James O. Born. This is a newer (2023) book in a series about a detective in NYC. I am going to try to find earlier books for background info on the characters. It was a good thriller about a killer of young women who are in a dating service.
