Literature What are you currently reading?

Well for me, the best part of this series is the dragons! I just skim over the romance stuff. LOL This book wasn't that great but I like the battles and the evil ones are pretty cool.
yes. when I read the second book I realized I could just skip the sexy parts. Besides the dragons I liked the characters and all the intrigue.

I have just finished "The Griffin Sisters Greatest Hits" by Jennifer Weiner. She is one of my favorite authors and this is her newest book. She writes what I would call family dramas with lots of excellent character development and wonderful writing. Her characters are so real and so damaged, you feel all of their pain as their stories are told. It jumps back and forth in time as it is the story of Cherry, who is 18, and her Mom Zoe and Aunt Cassie who had a band back in the early "aughts". There is a lot of heartache and trauma and a lot about "fat-shaming". It is a great book, very emotional and had me in tears. (which isn't that unusual)

I bought a book on kindle yesterday. The Swedish Art of Ageing Well: Life wisdom from someone who will (probably) die before you - Margareta Magnusson. I'm going to start that today.

Does emotionally challenging mean I will be crying my eyes out? I do that a lot!

Finally finished "Playworld" by Adam Ross. The 500+ book was a bit of a struggle as it was very "wordy". Not that the writing was bad, it was very good and excellent at describing NYC of the 80's. There was just a lot of stuff in it that I didn't really relate to. It is a coming of age story of 14 year old Griffin who is an actor and a HS wrestler. The acting stuff was interesting, the wrestling, not so much. It takes place over a few years in the 80's as Griffin struggles with many teenage problems especially love. There is quite a lot of disturbing content as the adults in this book are not the best people. I gave it 3 stars.

I just finished listening to The Lost Bookshop

I started it as my bedtime story but it required too much attention. I have been mostly listening to it in the car.
there are three POVs in the book. they alternate by chapter. and they use a different narrator for each one.

I finished this in one day as it was so compelling I just didn't stop reading - I have to admit that because of the 3 POVs I sometimes had to stop and think about who it was I was reading about. I have a few more of Evie Woods books on Hold. Currently reading Mud Vein which is a very strange book, also compelling.

finished Mud Vein (by Tarryn Fisher) yesterday and wow, what a book and concept - well worth reading - thriller, mystery, romance - When reclusive novelist Senna Richards wakes up on her thirty-third birthday, everything has changed. Caged behind an electrical fence, locked in a house in the middle of the snow, Senna is left to decode the clues to find out why she was taken.

also read (until 4am or so) another Abby Jimenez book - Just for the Summer - also very good and I put a Hold on her new one that just came out and it says I have to wait a year... she is a very popular author

Today I read "We Would Never" by Tova Mirvis. I picked this new book up just browsing. It is a compelling family drama and murder mystery. How far would you go to protect a family member? The story begins with Hailey, a 34 year old woman, watching a video of herself being interrogated by the police after her ex-husband is murdered. Then we jump back and begin our journey into the lives of the very dysfunctional Marcus family. Really good writing, character development, and twists and turns. I couldn't put it down!

I'm reading the second Royal Spyness Mystery, A Royal Pain. There are a bunch of more of these and I will have to see if I can find them.

The reluctant amateur detective in these is the 34th in line for the crown. But broke (her father lost everything in 1929). She has moved out of her ancestral home in Scotland and lives in her family's mansion in London. But without an allowance or servants. Besides the challenges of just getting on, she is continuously involved in solving murders and secretly helping the queen.

It's lighthearted and reminds me a lot of the novels by PG Wodehouse I used to love. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the authors historical research involved reading a lot of Wodehouse.
