The coffee Lovers thread

I forgot Dave Barry-used to read his column when I got the Sunday Plain Dealer! Miss newspaper on Sun morning.
I think my mom turned me on to him when I was visiting her in Florida. But later I was happy to find that the San Jose paper had his column on the back page of their Sunday Magazine. I read some of his books and even saw watched the TV show they made for him.
Civet cat coffee-perfect example of animal abuse for humans greed . First time I heard of this was a story from Nat'l Geo I think, indigenous tribes would collect the berries and sell them to tourists in order to survive. Of course their way of life had already been exploited from colonization. Rich people saw the money in the civet coffee and now trap and cage them for profit

I just thought the article was funny. I hadn't given any thought about how they collected the poop.

I never had a cup of that coffee. Wasn't planning on it. And now I can safely promise I never will.

I remember hearing something about this a while ago. Bizarre yet interesting.
There are a couple of lines that I thought were perfect.

We want to strike the lattespressacino people with our carry-on baggage and scream "GET OUT OF OUR WAY, YOU TREND GEEKS, AND LET US HAVE OUR COFFEE!" But of course we couldn't do anything that active until we've had our coffee.
You know how sometimes, when you're really skeptical about something, but then you finally try it, you discover that it's really good, way better than you would have thought possible? This is not the case with Luwak coffee. Luwak coffee, in my opinion, tastes like somebody washed a dead cat in it.

I've been trying to stock up on my favorite, ethially sourced, reasonably priced coffee at Costco. I'd seen it go from $11.99 for 2 lbs to 12.59 over the past two years--I went today to see it at $15.99
Lousy Maxwell House of course was still cheap

I'm doomed because I can only drink Starbucks decaf Verona, Peet's decaf dark roast house blend or Major Dickason, and cafe Bustelo or Gavina espresso.

I stopped drinking coffee everyday because of calories. I only have it 2-3 times a week on a day when I know I will be more active. But my son is up to 3-4 cups a day but he drinks caffeinated...I may have to increase his rent lol.

There are virtually no calories in coffee. A single shot espresso has 2. I add soya milk and a dash of cream which works out as very low carb coffee.

I couldn't live without my morning cup of coffee with milk.

Lol...you do realize who you are talking to, right? 😘

Four ounces of coffee, 2 calories...one teaspoon of sugar, 15 calories. And then 8 tablespoons of Silk soy creamer, 160 calories. And that's if I keep it to four ounces of coffee. Some days I want a big mug of it. Believe me when I say I have tried every possible way to drink it...all of the alternative non dairy milks/creams. I think what I'm drinking is the equivalent to a latte or cappuccino? I need the coffee extra strong with a lot of creamer. The teaspoon of sugar is fine. I can afford the 15 calories. It's the creamer that kills it for me.

I don't "need" the coffee because it's decaf...whereas some people need the caffeine to get them going. I just love it so much...it's more of an emotional/mental need for me lol.

I was so intrigued by the calorie count that, I actually weighed (which I never do) both soya milk and cream when I made my coffee this morning.

French press strong coffee made with two scoops = 4 calories
100 ml soya milk plus a splash = 42 cal
Soya cream 1 tsp...I'm guessing 10 cal
sweetener = 0

Result a strong cup of creamy, sweet and delicious coffee

Total 54 calories

Are you sure that it's not Kj that you're counting instead of calories? If the Silk creamer is sugar free, it's strange that it has such a
high calorie content. I used to buy sugar free plant based milk and add a tbs of sugar free creamer to my coffee when I was in CA and
it tasted creamy but not laden with calories. I must admit it was very hard to find both sugar free milk and creamer as so many food products are laden with either corn syrup or sugar. I bought the two items at Grocery Outlet and they were far cheaper compared to the usual supermarkets. Coffee was also hard to find as the quality wasn't really very good.

I'm not cherry picking but just trying to understand, as I think that it's a shame not to have a cup of coffee in the morning if you enjoy it.
I need and also enjoy my cup in the morning as tea simply isn't as tasty as coffee imo.

The silk soy creamer is not sugar free sadly. It's probably why I only need one teaspoon of additional sugar lol. It's why I tried using almond milk or other alternatives instead of the creamer but it just doesn't taste good to me. I was a big 1/2 and 1/2 drinker in my dairy days and silk soy creamer is the closest I've come to replacing that. It's soooo good. And creamy.

I bought a creamer in CA that was sugar free but cannot remember the name. Will look it up. I have never understood why so many American products contain sugar. Everything seems sweet, even salad dressings, chips, vinaigrette and bread.

It's the fact that I need so much of it. One tablespoon would never do. I tried making weaker coffee and using less creamer and it's just 🤢

It's my own fault...I could give up a snack during the day to make up for it lol. And I do most days when I really want coffee. 😊 Or I can stop obsessing and let myself become overweight again. I don't like that idea so much. I can't exercise any more than I already do either. Plus as I've mentioned previously, the more I exercise the hungrier I am. It's quite a catch 22!

Weak coffee is horrible. It would seem that it's the creamer that is the culprit. Have you seen any that have no sugar?

I add Silk vanilla soy milk to my coffee. I'd buy creamer but it's expensive and the Silk product I drink just plain with a snack at night too.
I've gone from 3 -4 cups of coffee to to just 12 oz a day.
I've found that with the expensive shade grown coffee I don't even need any milk with it. But if I buy cheaper coffee I do need milk.

I don't "need" the coffee because it's decaf...whereas some people need the caffeine to get them going. I just love it so much...it's more of an emotional/mental need for me lol.
since you are not addicted to the caffein - its just an emotional thing. You might find some kind of replacement. I'd recommend hot cocoa but then there is the calorie thing.
