The man in the cowboy hat who held the young man's leg vein as he was being raced to the ambulance (the young man lost both his legs below the knee) is a peace activist whose older son was killed in Iraq and his younger son later committed suicide. If I were to guess, I would say that the younger brother probably looked up to his older brother and followed his lead. The older brother seems to have drifted since graduating high school, not finding a place for himself, and probably gravitated to this as a way of making a mark.

Very sad, that so many lives may have been damaged or destroyed for such a mundane reason, but mundane reasons lie at the heart of most evil that is perpetrated.
