Vegetarian Society 168 years old today

It shouldn't be surprising that the practice of vegetarianism in Western countries isn't a new idea. I have a book called Jewish Cooking in America that mentions the popularity of vegetarian clubs among Jewish immigrants around the turn of the 20th century, for both health and ethical reasons. These Jewish vegetarians encouraged restaurants in Jewish neighborhoods to serve vegetarian dishes, such as a vegetarian version of the famous Jewish chopped liver (and IIRC there's a recipe for vegetarian chopped "liver" in the book that uses walnuts as a main ingredient).
