Training for the Olympics; how much is too much?

I feel great sympathy for these young Chinese athletes who basically give their whole lives to training with little or no consideration for their personal lives... but I can't say that I'm very much surprised by this.

From the link: She has become one of her sport's all-time greats, but her father says the success has come at a high price to her personal life. If it's by choice I'm all for it. There's no feeling greater than giving everything you've got to achieve something you consider to be great. But if it's to live up to someone else's expectations at the cost of your own dreams, then even a little training is too much.
