TV & Film The "Duck Dynasty" brouhaha

Exactly. There is no such thing as bad publicity. Only ignoring them will make them go away.
Yeah,I agree.Unfortunately, though I know some people who watch it.They seem a little :weird: but I guess some people could watch it for entertainment purposes only and not agree with their ahh....common sense?Never watched it myself and don't want to.

I read someone online who was defending this guy but I stopped reading it very quickly.

There has been a case over here and the lead singer of a rock band has now been sentenced for child molestation and baby rape and record sales have seen an increase since he was charged. :fp:

I kept reading references to Duck Dynasty and I assumed that it was some type of children's programme.:D

I thought this too up until around Halloween when Duck Dynasty costumes became so popular.

I read this a few weeks ago. I used to be a fan of theirs. I threw out all their cds right after I read this.

I saw someone defending that guy, because he abused children and not animals.
That's horrible.

I used to love the Arts & Entertainment network. Now they just have trash on; I don't know what happened.

No one can convince me that *anyone* associated with A&E was surprised by this guy's views on homosexuality or African-Americans. He's said similar ignorant things publicly for years. He's a redneck southern preacher hunter in his 60's.

I hope A&E cancels the show, but with merchandise sales alone at $400,000 this year, I think they'll try to find a way to keep it on the air.

It's all about the money and the ratings. A&E is the new TLC.

The media business is very cutthroat. The basic cable channels realized that they had to change their programming or die. Without the right kind of programming, no viewers, and without enough viewers, they'll get dumped from cable company lineups and possibly go out of business. We used to have a channel here called Ovation which featured fine arts programming such as dance and opera. We don't have it anymore. That's not the kind of thing that attracts millions of viewers; it's the crap that you see nowadays like Honey Boo Boo and DD which pander to the lowest common denominator. Another problem is that there are very few independent cable channels anymore. Most of them are owned by larger media companies and are part of packages that the cable companies agree to air, and so they have to have programming that will bring in the viewers. It's all about the money, doncha know.

I wish everyone would just ignore them. This attention is what they want - and they sure are getting it!

My father just posted on FB in support of this dumbass and I wasn't able to hold my tongue.

Yes, he cN say whatever he wants. But no, it isn't a First Amendment violation. :wall:

They are as fake as can be, this is them before the beards.

I still have very little idea what this show is about. And I don't really want to know, because from what I hear, they don't deserve any publicity.

There's this whole other story that isn't being told. It can be found here.
Sociologists Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo and Michael Messner suggest that pointing the finger at the racist and homophobic attitudes of rural, poor whites — or the sexist and homophobic beliefs of brown and black men, like in criticism of rap and hip hop — draws our attention away from structures of inequality that systematically serve the interests of wealthy, white, straight, and urban men who ultimately are the main benefactors. As long as we keep our concerns on the ideological bigotry expressed by one type of loser in the system, no one notices the corporate or government policies and practices that are the real problem.

While all eyes are on the poor, rural, white, Southern bigot, we fail to see the owners of media corporations sitting comfortably in their mansions making decisions about which hilarious down-trodden stereotype to trot out next. Sexist, homophobic, and racist ideology gets a voice, while those who really benefit laugh all the way to the bank.

@Spang, very interesting link.

"A&E's decision to reinstate Phil Robertson on "Duck Dynasty" shows the network has "chosen profits over African American and gay people," the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) said today."
