TV & Film The decline of TV shows

Even though I like a lot of the newer shows I think my favourite show of all time is still Frasier.:)

For me, growing up I watched a lot of Married With Children, The Simpsons, and Full House. The Simpsons lost its humor sometime around season 10-12, and the others went off the air. It was sometime around the mid- to late-90's where it started to decline.

There are a lot more Americans today than there used to be. I understand the internet has hurt ratings, but I would think
the tens of millions more potential viewers should help make it less of a decline. Idol has lost a lot of its popularity so you're left with very few shows that pull in great ratings these days.

Americans are watching more TV than ever before:

The average American spends 34 hours a week watching TV, and another 3-4 hours watching taped programs: http://www.nydailynews.com/entertai...watching-tv-nielsen-numbers-article-1.1162285

Americans are watching more TV than ever before; it's just that they are watching some of it on devices other than a TV: http://qz.com/69940/america-is-watching-more-tv-than-ever-before-just-not-on-tv/

That's the case with me; I watch on my laptop.

If any given show has less popularity, you need to realize that there used to be three channels available, and those not on the air 24 hours per day. Now there are hundreds of channels available, on air not just 24/7, but specific shows are available whenever a viewer wants to watch, through online streaming. It's pretty basic math to understand the difference.

There are also a lot more choices on the moving picture box.

I've been recording TV shows to watch later ever since I got my first VCR back in the late 1980's. This was back when most people used their VCRs mainly for playback of prerecorded videos rather than for recording off the air. It's just that (with digital devices) everyone else has finally caught up to me. :p

I watch the Golden Girls a lot on Hallmark, love that show.
Some of the newer shows I watch are Royal Pains, Drop Dead Diva, Revenge, American Horror Story, Shark Tank, Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, The Middle, Suburgatory, Modern Family....I watch way too much TV. :p

:)

A new episode is about to start in a few minutes. I love that show.

I am another who watches TV a LOT! I admit a lot of the time it is just for the background noise but I do faithfully watch a few shows I feel are quality viewing. I still watch Law & Order: SVU and I am totally hooked on The Walking Dead and Parenthood. Another addicting drama is Orphan Black. I think reality shows are pretty much a waste of time though I do enjoy So You Think You Can Dance. :D

:D One of my favorite summer shows.

As for reality shows, I sometimes watch Hell's Kitchen if nothing else is on. Occasionally, I catch reruns of Project Runway (I really like seeing what they create out of things they have to use from odd places, like pet shops and candy stores), and Face Off.

That's nice to know, because everyone in my inner circle ( and they all have flat TV's) apparently doesn't watch TV.

I watch a fair amount of "tv" but rarely anything as it's broadcast. We don't have cable, so we pretty much just get the major networks and a couple PBS stations.

We watch the local news in the morning, national news sometimes in the evening. I watched two seasons of The Voice, but after two country singers winning in a row, I'm done with that.

We use Netflix and Amazon Prime to pick and choose what we want to watch, so we have loads of quality shows to watch. (I also sometimes use BBC iPlayer to watch BBC shows on my computer.)

I think it's pretty easy to find good quality shows, as I don't have to wade through the junk or rely on broadcast schedules.

I never really liked taping shows to watch later. Never ha a dvr. (The cable companies charge way too much for those. Not in my budget.) Watching on Netflix on-demand is far more preferable to me than any other option.

This might show my age/generation, but I like the idea of having a lot of channels to choose from (channel surfing). This increases the likelihood of stumbling on something that looks interesting and wanting to watch it. Otherwise, how do you know what you want to watch? Is it just by word of mouth or reading suggestions on the internet? Not everything that airs on TV is discussed by your friends or mentioned on the internet.

Yes.

I hate channel surfing. I've always felt that if I don't immediately find/know of something I want to watch, I need to turn off the tv and find something else to do. Channel surfing is just a waste of time. I prefer having the few channels we have now, so watching tv is a deliberate action, not a default.

Any show that isn't being discussed by my friends or mentioned on the parts of the internet I hang out in probably isn't worth my time.

I do also utilize the suggestions feature on Netflix, and browse their new releases, genres I'm interested in, etc. Faster than channel surfing, and there's no wondering... if I go though the channels just one more time, will I find something? It's true I might miss something, but really I already watch several quality shows, it's not like my life will be ruined if I don't stumble across one more. My Netflix queue probably has months of material for me to watch (tv and movies); why would I want to surf through a hundred channels of trash tv when I can just choose something from my queue and I'm all set?

I look forward to the day when there is no longer a traditional cable/satellite subscription based model. I want to be able to subscribe to specific stations and have everything they offer be available on-demand streaming. Love HBOGO, Netflix and Amazon steaming. I've taken to buying particular shows like Dexter from Amazon for streaming because I don't have a Showtime subscription. Hope Netflix continues to offer original content.
