Yeah, I guess it was a just a hangup my mom hasWhen I'm in North America, I call the loo the Restroom. In the UK either the toilet or I'll say that 'I have to spend a penny'.
In public places throughout the UK the signs do say toilets, this isn't considered rude or vulgar.

Same here, especially those with a broad Glasgow accent.
Also re the toilets discussion I have been known to say " can I use your Bathroom" when at someone else's house, didn't know it was an Americanism! I often say loo and was recently told its quite a posh word- I actually thought it was less posh than saying toilet but apparently not. At my work most of the women I work with (who tend to be of an older generation) will say "I'm going to the ladies" or " I'm just going to powder my nose." In general I prefer not to announce where I'm going though.
