People hate vegans - Freud could explain why

Despite the fact that many entertainment celebrities are vegan, if only temporarily, vegans are still a favorite target of jokes for Hollywood writers. I don't remember which show it was, but I was watching something on TV recently where a character made fun of vegans. I guess the average viewer was supposed to laugh in recognition of how stupid and awful and obnoxious vegans are. It's not the first time I've encountered jokes about vegans and vegan food on TV or in movies. I think some writers reach for the vegan-bashing jokes because they lack real creativity and the vegan-bashing jokes are reliable, an old standby, like making fun of white people dancing or mean ex-wives or something.

I was pleasantly surprised, when it came out on a non-vegan facebook group that I am vegan, I was actually praised for it. I really never expected that.

he thinks it's fear of being a bad person; I think maybe it is fear of death.....meat represents the process of transforming a living being into a lump of meat....laughing off meats like bacon, is laughing in the face of death, maybe..

I agree, and also the reality that eating meat may be a slow form of suicide adds to their fear. It's all about denial.

My friends/family jump at every opportunity to tell other people that I'm vegan, like they are bragging about me. It's kind of cool, even though I'm not, technically, vegan and prefer to not use the label. It does make it easier for identification purposes.

Is there a specific reason why you're not vegan KL ?

Probably laziness. :( I see so many debates about the degrees of vegan-ness and it's so hard for me to be perfect. I can't always find whole wheat bread without honey. Occasionally, if I'm away from home, I'll opt for the veggie burger which may or may not have egg in it. Instances like that. I'm really uncomfortable asking questions to the server so I go with the best option on the menu.

When I prepare my own food at home it's easy. I prefer to not call myself vegan around others (like veggie forums [emoji4]) who clearly are, out of respect. I am oh so close, and for now, as much as I covet the label, I'm doing the best I can, for me, under any given circumstance.

And then there's the whole non-diet side to it. Again, I make conscious vegan choices as much as possible.

I guess I admire those people who are so good at it and I don't know if I will ever get there but I keep trying. Hope this makes sense, lol.

I also agree that it is so much easier when you're at home, as you can control what goes into your meals. I have also noticed that the bread is so sweet in the US but didn't realise that honey was one of the ingredients used.

I was discussing food yesterday with someone and she pointed out the fact that I was on a vegan diet some time ago. However, I felt that my body couldn't keep it up. Furthermore, there is less choice for vegans over here and we don't even get vegan cheese. As I'm still working I can splurge out and order some very expensive vegan cheese but there will be a time when I won't be able to afford it.

I'm sure that it would be easier if I wasn't such a fussy eater. On the other hand you certainly seem to be doing well and as you say, you are doing the best you can.

People just want to remain complacent and not make changes because it might be too inconvenient for them. It's easier to criticize everyone else who IS walking the walk.
