What do you do with non vegan food already purchased?

I purchased a small packet of chocolate chip cookies this evening, but I saw that milk was an ingredient only after I got home. I didn't see the point of throwing the cookies away, so I ate them.

What do you do with nonvegan food that has already been purchased and given to you by a friend who didn't know you're vegan?

if you really don't wish to eat it yourself then giving it away to someone that will would be less wasteful than throwing it away - if it was a slab of beef I would not eat it for sure, it was a pastry with a tiny amount of milk or egg then I would not be too upset to eat it although I would likely hope that my honey would eat it before I did

I think we all need to accept our comfort levels. The fact that this isn't going to cause any impact on animals or the production of animal products, but a personal purity issue. I agree with Emma, I would be happier to give it away, but I wouldn't go out my way. If it were meat, or something where eggs were a main ingredient I would throw it out if no one else were available. If it was just an ingredient like egg in a baked thing, gelatin or honey, or where milk is listed as allergen I wouldn't feel bad eating it myself. I am pretty good at reading every label but things still sneak by me, or sometimes I'll be given something someone doesn't like and thinks I will
You have to judge for yourself. In the early days I did avoid these things, it would really bother me, but now it just seems more performative and not beneficial to be so strict.

That's probably the best time to be strict about it, otherwise you never actually 'start' being vegan. E.g. if you've got a tub of margarine or worcestershire sauce in the cupboard that you don't want to waste, in some people's eyes you'll be the vegan that eats milk and anchovies for a longggg time.

Agree about our different comfort levels. For me, I wouldn't eat it. I would give it away. I can usually find someone who will take it. I don't look at it as trying to attain personal purity, per se, but if I see eggs, milk or honey in a baked good, I won't eat it, as those are ingredients I avoid, but that's me. :D

That happens to me when someone gives me non-vegan food as a gift. I usually try to give it away but if that is not possible I usually just throw it away. Eg someone gave me smarties and I threw it away because it's just not healthy.

Are you afraid that if you eat something non-vegan that tastes good, you might develop a craving for it?

I won’t speak for anyone but myself and my reason is that I don’t want to take Any part in the Cruelty that comes with eating or drinking products which are a result of Animal Exploitation…
Just because an Animal is not killed in the process of taking their milk or their eggs or their honey doesn’t mean that the Animal has not been Exploited…

Eating what you already bought makes total sense, tossing it wouldn't undo the purchase anyway, it'd just be food wasted for nothing. Most vegans I know draw the line at future purchases, not past ones — the goal is reducing demand going forward, not punishing yourself for a label you missed. Same logic applies with a friend's gift, honestly; eat it, thank them, and maybe just mention casually next time so they know for future reference.
