Tonight I was peeling an onion and noticed something that looked like a fine layer of dark grey dust between the outermost skin and the next layer in. I've actually seen this many times before. What is this? Dirt? Sand? Some kind of fungi?

I would say it is a little bit of mould... when onions and garlic are harvested they need to be put in a dry place for a few weeks so they can loose a little excess moisture and it means they will have a longer shelf life.. but sometimes this is not carried out properly so you find onion which goes a little mouldy or garlic which gets rotten before its time. Not really a drama with the grey patch though, just cut it out.
