  1. Vegan
so i've been walking this vegan path for a while and boy oh boy has it been an adventure

in a place like Australia i find it almost hilarious how the vegan movement is on the rise, yet

there is much hate in the community towards people like me... not sure why though?

then it occurred to me that even as vegans we may inadvertently be promoting hate towards animals

because on a spiritual level if we eat a vegan product labelled as an "animal" such as "duck seitan" as opposed to BBQ GLAZED SEITAN or something other

then we could accidentally be fueling the idea of society continuing the murder of innocent animals by consuming "duck"

what are your thoughts? should vegans be more responsible in choosing appropriately named products?

personally i do my best to eat ethically

~ no palm oil to avoid orangutan habitats being destroyed
~ no almonds due to monoculture farming trucking bees around
~ sifting my favourite vegan restaurant menus to only eat dishes without animal labels (even if i must pass on some of my previously favourite meals)
~ etc
~ etc

looking forward to your response...

and wishing you all a great and happy day :)

When people eliminate things from their food choices, regardless of reason, they still retain the memories of meals and what appealed to them
When I gave up meat I never craved it--I did crave textures, and memories of those foods, and when I began experimenting with seitan that brought those memories back. Shreddiness, that moist fatty chew, the salty savoriness. I knew it didn't taste like meat and I didn't want it to, but it did have the resemblance. I used to try and just say white or dark seitan, but then I'd need to explain it to omnivores, who would end it with "oh, so it's like plant based chicken". There just aren't great words that sound right.
If you give up sugar, or gluten, you'd still call the subs their related names. Sometimes it just makes sense

I remember when saying tofu would unanimously get an "ewwwwww....", today it's just another protein to most people.
When we say chik'n or beef we're talking about the flavors that they;re infused with, not the blood or muscles. Like poultry seasoning is all herbs, as well as Montreal steak seasoning.

I just try and appeal to what makes sense to people. I do like saying I'm having seitan for lunch though

I'm on the other end of the spectrum. I would like to see more vegan products with animal names.

How about Kentucky Fried Dragon Wings
or Kraken chowder
or barbecued basalisk.
And you could make it taste really good and not have to mimmic anything cause no one knows what those things taste like.
I also think it would be a big hit with the under 20 crowd.
Maybe we would hear vegan origin stories like, "it all started when I discovered I Love KFDW.

maybe because "tofu farts smell like egg" ? lol :P

i find that slightly relevant and funny for so many reasons

1. that kind of saying is based on the real science that some smelly farts are caused by sulfur compounds, particularly hydrogen sulfide, which produces a "rotten egg" smell... hence the ewwwww remark/response from your friends/colleagues hehehe

2. yes we have thins "chicken" chips in the snack isle and without checking "fussy vegan app" then all the ingredients are vegan as per everyday terms that a general person would be aware of as either vegan or not... and yes, i too do agree that they taste like "dill chips from latvia" #herbsnotchicken ")

3. have you ever walked past a seafood market? do you ever smell something akin to urine in the air? #foodforthought

and yes, seitan salads i've often enjoyed

have a great day and until next time :) #stayhappyandwell

i kid you not... i bought a bag of "self raising flour" when living in QLD of AUSTRALIA and threw it in the river

not only did i feel like my aura or internal air increase in strength and vitality for about a day or so... heaps of fish simply appeared in the river too :)

lol this kind of thing seems to be becoming more and more prolific and diverse, so much so that many alcohol companies for one include animal images as their mascots... like a naturally fermented chilled (or room temperature) red that i have once or twice have enjoyed to great effect... you guessed it, fish logo hahaha

well, that theme has kind of continued with me ever since then... as just the other day a heap of eals appeared in the lake as i walked past just the other day (GLEBE SYDNEY AUSTRALIA)... and about a meter long fish looking approximately 30cm in width in the waterways of the parkways of the city i'm currently residing in (CENTENNIAL PARK RANDWICK AUSTRALIA)

kind of a long intro and fun trivia

although you never know

if that type of thing is common, then yes we could be of positive assistance to bring animals back through the veil from spirit form into physical matter by simply using interesting logo... like a sea dragon or even flying dragon as you would suggest :)

or maybe "the devil" would like to resurface? :P

Ah.... no. No one has ever mentioned tofu farts, or tofu smelling like egg, except you! What I was getting at, is in years past many people made fu of tofu, and all soy products, because of false statements of estrogen, but mostly looks and for being weird. Now no one bats an eye when you say tofu. My point was someday what we refer to as 'vegan xxx' will also come to be accepted .
If tofu gives you farts that smell of eggs....maybe best you avoid it
Meats are the number one smelly gas producers, for sulfur compounds you mention.

Hi , personally , l don't like the "pretend animal" vegan products - why do we need to pretend we're eating a duck or a chicken ? Also , l find those products are highly processed and full of unhealthy additives etc.. Vegans can be unhealthy , too .. Highly processed food is the cause of a lot of our modern-diet health problems ..
Vegetables .Fruit . Nuts and seeds and legumes .. These really should ( on the basis of health) be making up at least 90 % of the diet .. Sure , there's room for some vegan chocolate or dessert... a small amount of organic millet bread or similar ... some soy or oat milk .. Chick pea flour ..

There are so many different meals that can be made just using those four or five ingredients , we don't find it necessary to buy highly processed food .

If you want to eat those , there's no judgement from me - but l do find it odd that people need to hang onto the perception of eating animals - even in name only ..
Just my personal opinion ..

Neither omnivore or vegan indicates what you eat, and the omission of animal products doesn't indicate vegans are any healthier.
I think it's ridiculous to think most veg'ns want to pretend they're eating meat. I may often call my seitan chik'n or beef, but the only resemblence is the seasoning, and when I call it white or dark seitan people just say it's like chicken or beef, so why argue. It's called cooking. How people perceive it is not my issue.
If you want to make the point of being healthy it's more honest to use the term whole foods, whether Omni or vegan

I never call plant based protein by an animal name. Moreover, none of the fake meat products really taste like animal flesh. I'm also a tad weary of unpleasant remarks on the behalf of omnis, as they obviously think that I'm missing out on eating flesh. It opens up a can of worms and omnis wonder why some vegans call pb protein 'lamb', 'beef' etc.

The other day, I was at a meetup at at a friend's. I couldn't eat the cake that she had bought especially for the occasion. One of the ladies said to me ''as long as you don't feel deprived all is well''! I answered that in no way was I feeling deprived. Just thinking of eating an omni product would have been far worse.

I’m in agreement with you @shyvas about the labels for plant based products… Not having eaten any animal products for over 30 years I have no desire to eat anything that might taste like meat… The plant based proteins that I prefer are tofu, seitan and beans which I season to my taste… I do understand however that for transitioning the meaty labeled products are potentially useful… I’ve never tried the Beyond or Impossible burger’s and never will - I have had a few of the products that imitate - like the Quorn pepperoni, but that’s just for the spicy taste and I don’t really care for it that much…Health wise they are better than meat but, it’s still better to cook from scratch in my view…

Your response at the meetup was Excellent! There is no way that I feel deprived by not eating non Vegan food either… I try to let people know as gently as possible that I am not missing out, but rather Choosing how and what I eat according to my values and ethics… Yes, it would be better if there were more Vegan options available and it would be Best if everything was Vegan! Land&Monkeys sounds So amazing! We need More places like that!

I think the animal labels have a lot to do with convienece, efficient communication. also appealing to those vegans who are new or transitioning plus others who just want to eat less meat. There is some some marketing issues as well

Soy milk is a good example. At Trader Joe's they don't put soy milk on the carton. It's a Soy Beverage. But the words "Soy Milk" provide the consumer with a better idea of of what it is and also IMHO sounds better.

Chick'n and Beef Less allow the consumers to buy something like beef and chicken in their recipes.

I'm not too sure if that was the manner in which she interpreted my response. This particular group of women are very anti vegan from what I'm reading when I meet up with them. I actually didn't want to join in when it was my turn to give an update, on what I had done during the summer months. Their updates was all about their holidays either abroad or in posh style all inclusive hotels and mine was; feeding pidges, destringing pidges, completing the ARM in London, online activism and caring for the strays plus doing vegan meetups in Brighton.

Someone outside of the group said that I should have been proud to stand up for my values but I didn't want to hear their remarks, as it would have offended me. Naturally, they all hate pidges and think that I'm an extremist.

The next meet-up is in January where they will celebrate the 3 kings with cake.

Indeed Land & Monkeys is the most fabulous bakery and it's quite popular. However, the owner Quentin, said that many customers do not know that it's plant based. :D
