US US politics 2025

A comment I read on YT regarding Hegseth and Trump's recent rah-rah get-together with the generals and admirals in Virginia:

Everyone knows members of the military are "suckers". And Trump doesn't even get credit for that being an original thought, it's stolen from Vito Corleone.

A lot of Trump/Maga/Republican actions seem fairly reasonable when analysed individually, but it's the whole pattern that has to be looked at.

Is Trump maybe correct that some of his opponents need to be investigated for potential crimes? Don't know, but the overall pattern is one where his enemies get investigated and his friends don't.

Are they right that movies and some mainstream media Universities are rather left leaning and perhaps could have more conservatives? Yes, but are they also questioning right-leaning organizations like the Supreme court, military, police, and immigration officials and trying to get more balance there as well? No.

Have they been correct, or at least more aligned, on some culture wars issues? Perhaps, but only by cherry picking some things, and ignore others. You'll never hear them say "oh, in this particular area, we actually need more focus on social justice."

Are they right that Kimmel ideally shouldn't have implied that Charlie Kirk's killer might be from the right? Yes, but there's no complaint when Trump's allies (or himself) make much worse accusations.

The underlying trend of just wanting more power just gets clearer and clear.

Some of you will have seen that Trump's on the record saying the President is the one responsible for shutdowns:
Here's an analysis of his comments:
I did see this several times across my Facebook feed.

The man is insane, as are his supporters.

"Although President Donald J. Trump has not appeared in public since Tuesday, his social media account has been posting up a storm. Just three weeks ago, administration officials were insisting that Democrats were responsible for hateful political speech. Trump’s account last night posted images of prominent Democrats, including former President Joe Biden, with the heading “THE PARTY OF HATE, EVIL, AND SATAN.” It went on to say: “The Democratic Party is Dead! They have no leadership! [N]o message! [N]o hope! [T]heir only message for America is to hate Trump!”
The Trump account posted another AI video last night, as well. Set to the music of Blue Öyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear the Reaper,” the video shows Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance as band members—Trump on cowbell and Vance on drums—and features Director of the Office of Management and Budget Russell Vought as the Grim Reaper.
As the video shows the U.S. Capitol, changed song lyrics say: “Here the power’s gone.” Under Vought, they say: “Russ Vought is the reaper. He wields the pen, the funds, and the brain… Dems you babies… gonna tie your hands… won’t be able to fly… cry baby end your plan.” The video shows people as zombies walking past an unemployment office, then shows Democratic leaders behind a chorus of “blah, blah, blah, blah, blah” before ending with a Halloween-nightmare image of AI ghouls trick-or-treating in MAGA garb.
Veterans of the U.S. national security community posting as The Steady State noted that “a president posting a video depicting his opponents as prey for the Grim Reaper and zombies outside the ‘unemployment office’ is the opposite of what we expect in a healthy democracy.” "

@KLS52 I actually had to read your post just above twice: At first, I thought Democrat supporters had posted that "Don't Fear The Reaper" parody video to mock Trump and his allies, and I thought it was clever. But on second reading, I realized this video was posted from Trump's social media account.

There is a map where you can find the nearest one to you

Not sure if this website is legit or official or whatever though, just found it in a link in a random website, but perhaps OK

I do think it's legit. There are a few protests scheduled in my area.

my first impulse was to try to understand it from America's perspective. what do we get out of the deal. Better international relationships? an ally against other nations? more jobs and profits for our aerospace industry?
Then I remembered who our President is and I just figured it's just more money for Trump.

The Qatari base has been in the news in my area. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit I don't know much about that country, other than its general location, it's quite small, and that it's one of the Arab and predominately Muslim states. But evidently it's been a U.S. ally for some time, and is a mediator in the peace talks between Israel and Hamas.

how do those of you from USA feel about a Qatari air force base in Idaho? I know that Idaho borders Canada and I am pretty unhappy about it

I don't feel qualified to give an opinion on this but I find it difficult to trust anything that this current administration does. 😞
