Ugh, I had ABC on while I was doing other things and Tim Allen's show was on. I already knew it was a sexist, disgusting, offensive piece of crap after I attempted to watch the first episode, but now I see that it hasn't changed at all since then. I really hope that show gets cancelled.

It's very disappointing. There was so much hype around the show, but it just ended up sucking. Cheesy side effects, lame acting, and ridiculous dialogue.

I finally gave in and watched the Firefly series, and it is as good as everyone says.
The only thing I didn't like was inconsistent backwoods dialect some of them were using. I can understand the outer planets having an old west frontier atmosphere, but why would obviously intelligent people speak like they had an IQ of 50?

I saw Serenity a long time ago, before I ever heard of Firefly. I did rewatch it today though.

Well one thing you'll notice is that they use a lot of Chinese in addition to English, this is because the United Earth scenario the show presents would have the Western world and the Eastern world dominated by America and China before colonization took place. That's why those two cultures are so influential in the characters' speech and habits.

As for the backwoods dialect, I assume you mean common contractions of words and whatnot. I've never seen any formal explanation but I'd guess that this is due to two reasons: one, that's the language they grew up around (you'll notice Simon is considerably more professional because he's from the Inner Planets, though his habits do change with exposure to the Serenity crew), and two, because the definition of basic "intelligence" has changed over time. Nowadays most people know at least a little bit about modern science, with some exceptions of course. Imagine their future world, where fixing up a spaceship that our engineers couldn't dream of is a job relegated to small-town mechanics. That could just be the norm of basic knowledge for their time frame, sort-of like how quite a few people nowadays know how to fix a car even if they aren't a part of the assembly or design process.

So I'd say a mix of upbringing and the changing definition of modern intelligence, which is already shaky at best and will continue to show deviation as our societies continue to grow in the shitstorm of a technological world we live in.

We recently finished watching the last season of The Killing, which was disappointing script-wise at the end.

Also just finished a New Zealand drama mini-series called Top of the Lake, which was pretty good, although it was a bit "over the top" towards the end.

I loved the first series of the killing, but I admit I thought the second and third got progressively less-good. Not bad by any means though. Maybe I just got used to the way the plots were written. (I thought maybe if I had a cat I'd name it after Sarah Lund because she's so aloof, haha).

Ah, I meant the American version. The Danish series was perhaps slightly better overall. The first seasons of both were really good. The plot is completely different, BTW. The actor who plays Sarah Lund makes a small guest appearance is the American version though.

Im watching the first episode of that Dome thing. All I can think of is the Simpsons Movie, argh! So far it seems to have too much soapy stuff in it for my liking.
