TV & Film The TV Room

A new series of Food Unwrapped starts tonight. It's a program about how food is made commercially and answers interesting questions, they go to the factories, farms, etc, to show you how it works.

I think lots of shows like that can be really judgmental, and "oh look how awful and disgusting the food you eat everyday is! go and grow your own!"... it doesn't make for nice viewing, even if you don't eat much processed food. But this show isn't like that at all, it's just interesting. For example, last series they showed how you get all the skin of grapefruit that goes into tinned grapefruit (it's all picked by hand, then they use acid to burn off the bits that remain, and then an alkali to neutralise it) and what the bacteria in pro-biotic is (either fungus or from someones poo... and then they just breed it for years) or what the difference between wild and cultivated mushrooms is (it sounds obvious, but I assumed they grew wild mushrooms in farms, I didn't realise they were literally wild because they don't know how to grow them!).

:) Anyway I like it.

Ive put that on the record. I think its very interesting...although i suspect most omnis will brush off the ick factor next time they fancy a McDonalds or KFC :/

I was going to put it on series record but my fiance's already recording two things... we just got a blu ray player that'll record shows, so he's got a bit excited, recording 10x as many things as he'll watch :p

Most of it isn't really icky anyway, but I'm not very sensitive to that kind of thing, so maybe it is and my stomach of steel just doesn't realise :p

Oh by the way, one of the two foods they're doing this week is chicken kiev and you see lots of dead chicken. In case that bothers you Alice-Bee or anybody else :)

Don't know how many of you are Game of Throne fans, but the reactions to last nights episode are pretty intense. Got a kick out of this pie chart.

So, Orphan Black. Who's watching it? Let's talk about it. And also about what an amazing actress Tatiana Maslany is.

George RR Martin has basically rewritten the formula for "fantasy" type novels. There are no longer really good guys and really bad guys (just lots of shades of grey) though he does lead you down that path. Nor do the good guys always win and no matter how attached you might get to a particular character, they're not "safe". Those of us who read the books first understood this and knew what was going to happen, those that just tuned into the show were a bit shocked.

I checked wikipedia to see how far the GoT has gone. I was rather surprised with that turn of events in the book, though I knew some foul play would be involved.

I actually just got into this series, wish I'd heard about it while it was on, but went ahead and bought it through Amazon. Watched the 1st 3 episodes tonight... good stuff and yes Tatiana Maslany is quite the actress. She pulls off making each of her characters as unique individuals quite believably.

Started watching Orphan Black tonight because of you guys. No tv in room at mom's house and nothing new that I knew of. I like it.

Sorry, read this on my phone and meant to reply as soon as I got to a keyboard...and promptly forgot. :p

So how far are you now? I really think it's such a cleverly written show, part sci-fi without being hit-you-over-the-head sciencey (or excessively made up science); part crime drama without being boring and formulaic like most crime dramas.

Spoilered because these are questions I have after watching the season finale, so I might give away a few things.
WHO IS MRS S? And now that I think about it, it is kinda funny that when they went underground, they ended up in a city with at least 2 (3?) other clones, and a neolution owned office building/possible headquarters. That seems like quite the coincidence. I really don't want her to be a bad guy. :( Where's Kiera? Did Mrs S take her, and why?

Can we trust Delphine? I really want to believe she's on the side of the clones, but really, who knows. I really really hope they don't kill off Cosima, I really like her.

And Alison, holy ****. And Donny really was her watcher the whole time! Is he going to continue to monitor her now that she's signed the contract? I really think that the contract means zilch, and they will have to continue fighting the neolutionists for autonomy. What do we think about them being patented?
