With regard to Bin Laden, his non existence is all that matters. The timing or circumstances isn't important.

Plus since soldiers' actions are scrutinized closely nowadays, and they are at risk for being tried and convicted for actions taken, some of them may have changed details to save their butts. And the SEALS have this whole secrecy brotherhood thing going on.
