Today marks the tenth birthday of Veganuary! 1st January 2023 is the first day of the tenth Veganuary campaign… milestone or what?!

Veganuary has certainly become firmly established in its home: the UK. Can you believe that over those ten years nearly 10% of British adults (approximately 6 million people) have done Veganuary at least once? That’s according to new research by YouGov.

And it’s not too late to take part this year. Veganuary would love you to sign up for a month of daily support and recipe emails. You're welcome even if you’re already vegan, or if you’ve done Veganuary before.

Veganuary seems to be popular in the UK, amongst the younger omni generation. However, over here, most people that I know, haven't even heard of it.

''Although Veganuary has clearly changed the UK, the vegan aspiration to end animal exploitation is still a long way off. Researchers examining data from the ONS National Diet and Nutrition Survey found that Britons had cut meat consumption by 17% between 2009 and 2019, with a daily reduction of 13.7g of red meat and 7g of processed meat per person.

But there was also a 3.2g increase in white meat consumption, and the numbers of cattle, pigs and sheep slaughtered in the UK each year is broadly the same as it was in 2001, ranging from 26-29 million animals, according to Defra figures, while the UK population has also grown by about 3.7 million since 2011.

According to Glover and Land, there is still a lot left to do. “We’ve been asked a few times: are you happy with what Veganuary has achieved,” Glover said. “Well, no, not really, because animals are still getting eaten. When we launched the campaign, about 850 million chickens a year were slaughtered in the UK. Now it’s 1.1 billion.''

Comparing food products in supermarkets further to a recent trip to California, the UK and over here in France. I was wondering
whether it's the actual array of plant based foods that are promoting the rise of flexitarians and not the contrary. For anyone who wishes to reduce their meat/dairy consommation, it's a breeze if you're in the UK due to the array of delicious and tasty pb products that are available.

Over here, most of the population say it's too much faff to go plant based due to the very expensive and lack of tasty pb products. Pulses (legumes) are not a popular and frowned upon as a 'poor man's food'.

One of the biggest catalysts for the rise of meat free diet choices is of course the food itself. Food technology has come on leaps and bounds in the decades since the movement was established, and as a result vegan food catches the eye of more people than ever.

Because more people are open to considering plant-based diets, companies are more willing than ever to boost their R&D spending. In the UK alone, there were more than 770 new vegan products launched this January to coincide with the Veganuary campaign. This included offerings from high profile companies like McDonalds, Cadbury, Lindt and Starbucks.

Market research company Appinio revealed that a whopping 63.5% of Brits bought vegan food items in 2021. The same research also said 50.8% of Brits who eat meat are willing to replace at least some of their meat consumption with like-for-like plant-based meat substitutes.

In a similar vein, plant-based alternatives to milk have had roaring success among the population in recent years. Research by Ipsos this year found that 48% of British adults use plant milks of some kind in their diet, proving that the lifestyle is in no way incompatible with the Great British brew.

They've never heard of it and are not in the slightly bit interested. They are all meat/dairy eaters and don't think anything of shepherds killing wolves etc, etc.
