At some point in our Veg*n journey we will be asked 'those' questions by non veg*ns. You know the ones 'Cows NEEEEEED to be milked' etc. This thread is to help both new and experienced Veg*ns comeup with reasonable and logical replies.

1-Cows NEED to be milked

Answer:
No they dont.Think about this for one moment, how does a human female produce milk? She has a child, its the same for a dairy cow. Only they dont have a choice in the matter. They are forcfully impregnated and once the calf is born, it is taken away and the milk collected for human consumption. Once the cow is past breeding age, she is killed.

Sarcasim tends to get peoples backs up, not change their opinion ;)

I know youre only having a laugh, but I wanted this to be a serious thread. That can help people answer those 'clever' questions non veg*ns chuck at us. :)

ETA: Leaving this post up because I feel its relevent.

:p

I'm not a newbie... I've been vegetarian 9 years... but I still don't know how to answer "what DO you eat?" :???:This is one of the few questions I get a lot... but I have no idea how to answer. Telling people that I cook my own food so I eat lots of different things doesn't seem to answer their question.

If someone asks me what I eat, I'm get confused!Well you know, vegan stuff.....

As for chickens, I'm not sure how they really feel about popping out and egg, every day or so....it must be extremely draining in terms of nutrients.

And the animals they were breed from probably only had a few eggs each year, and then spent time raising the chicks.

The what DO you eat one is hard...because your mind goes blank.
Ive never been asked that to be honest. My guess is if I was Id probably answer with 'Pretty much what you do, just meat and/or dairy free' OR 'Regular stuff, i just use faux meat/cheese/etc instead'

Well I eat faux meat will be met with 'why eat something that mimics meat'?

I find it hard to wrap my head around the 'I don't see the point in fake meat' statement. I suppose that it just means they don't get the idea about not wanting to kill animals....it seems weird though; most of the omnies I've met seem to understand what veggies think. Someone said it to me a while back, and I was sort of lost for words.

Sometimes if people seem genuinely interested I tell them exactly what I ate yesterday, that usually seems to help, but it's quite long winded :p Hmm maybe it's just me that gets it all the time then, I am surrounded by curious people.

When someone said it to me I just replied:
I gave up meat because I love animals not because I disliked the taste.

Not sure how helpful that could be, depending on who youre talking to.

Someone once said to me that they didnt see why veg*ns would want to create fake meats like sausages and chicken nuggets, so i replied that sausage is not a cut of meat, so that makes it easier to fake? Because its far away from what 'meat' actually looks like.

If someone doesn't get the idea of fake meat, could this mean that they eat meat because it is made from animals? I suppose that one could ask them that.

Im not sure I understand that one. Are you saying some people actively consume meat because they like the idea of killing an animal to obtain it?

Mostly I assume people eat meat and disconnect themselves from the cruelty, because they have been raised on a "healthy" diet of meat and dairy so assume its the norm

oh yea, maybe they just see it as healthy...I forgot it was supposed to be healthy.

most fake meats have a lot of protein in them anyway, so maybe they don't know that.

When people ask what I eat I usually respond with my basic list of "beans, legumes, rice, pasta, tofu and lots of fruits and vegetables." I don't usually get into the meatless versions of chicken/burgers unless it's a lengthier conversation I'm having with someone.

I have more of a problem if I'm eating something like Gardein chicken or beef or Tofutti and they ask "what's it made of?"I don't really know exactly so it ends up giving them the impression that it isn't real food, like it was created from chemicals in a lab or something, hence, it is fake food and not natural. I need to be more prepared for these kinds of questions.

Short(ish) answer on the "what do you eat" question ..

"Any of the 12,000 edible plant species that grow on this planet, all derivatives thereof, cooked or raw, in any of #x (can't be bothered to do the math right now) combinations in as many different styles as their are countries in the world .."

Lactation consultant here, i love getting asked this question! :D

Great answer, Alice, and I will add to it. Milk of mammals is produced on a supply and demand basis. If there is no baby (or machine :( ) removing the milk, the supply will quickly dwindle. There will be a few full days where a little milk may need to be removed for comfort, but it will stop producing without the stimulation. Of course, humans have screwed up the system with cows because they've been bred to massively over-produce milk. Milked less, however, they would produce less. Her calf with her would have plenty plenty to drink, but humans would probably still have to remove some milk for the cow's comfort.

Gardein products all seem to be made out of soya protein and wheat gluten.
It's the first thing that I check on the pack as I often try and duplicate the product. Now, I'm craving the crispy chicken tenders....:(

If I had asked that question, I would take that as a bit of a sarcastic answer. I would insist on a more basic concrete response. After all not everybody knows what vegetarians eat.:(

^Exactly. I feel that replying in a very sacastic tone, almost talking down to a non veg*n will do you no favours. Thats why I started the thread to AVOID answers like yours CG.

Thanks Ledboots...Im no expert on the whole milk thing, I meanup till I went veggie I was a 'cows need to be milked' believer.

Dare i mention Honey?
Lots of non vegans ask that one. Like again, bees make it FOR humans.

If I had asked that question, I would take that as a bit of a sarcastic answer.

It has p*ssed off a few people who were expecting an easy to reject "I have to survive on entirely on lettuce and lentils ..." type reply, yes.

Seems to deliver a fair amount of perfectly concrete information to those askers who's curiousity is/was genuine though.
