I once bought several boxes of this:

"JIFFY" Mix - America's Favorite – From Chelsea Milling Company

Because it was on sale but neglected to read the ingredients label. It wasn't until I read in some magazine about hidden non-vegetarian ingredients that I thought to check and was horrified to realize that I bought a product containing lard. I guess I was thrown because my mother had used the mix at some point and I somehow thought it was "safe".

I donated the boxes of mix to a food pantry.

And I learned a valuable lesson: SCRUTINIZE EVERYTHING. Never assume anything is safe.

P.S. I don't know how long the vegetarian version has been around, but I don't think it was available when I bought the original.

Excellent video. :up:I have forwarded it to someone who eats chewy sweets.

However, not all chewy (gummy) sweets are made from gelatine. The vegetarian/vegan variety are made with starch and vegetal thickeners. They are just as delicious but are more difficult to find in the shops. Sainsbury's,Tescos and Waitrose sell them. M&S also have vegan gummy treats.
You can also find Australian soft liquorice which is vegetarian in most shops in the US and UK.
