Music Guilty Pleasures: Music Edition

Jack Off Jill are amazing!
Ive decided I dont have guilty pleasures because if im listening to something, its awesome ;)

Definitely a great band in Jack Off Jill. I probably wore out three copies of Clear Hearts, Grey Flowers in my time.

I think it depends on who I'm hanging out with at the time as to whether I feel guilty about listening to something or not. I mean, if I'm hanging with friends that are primarily into metal, if Stevie Wonder comes on my playlist, I'll feel guilty about it whether my friends say anything or not about it. I think it's more me than them. I've rarely had anyone bust my balls over a song or artist on my player.

When I was young, whenever I went into a friend's room, I would check out the album collection first, bookshelf second. My husband had the best of each, music and books. ;)

It's funny that I still feel this way after developing such a penchant for putting my player on random. Although, my playlists do have the habit of playing the most inappropriate song at any given moment. It would be almost funny if it happened to anyone but me.

In Jr. High and High School I remember there being several factions of music lovers. You couldn't possibly claim to be a punk rocker ala The Clash / Sex Pistols if you had a Pink Floyd record in your collection. Disco was not tolerated by either faction - and if you liked Iron Maiden even a little you were considered a metalhead and that was that. There was an intimidating divisivness present when it came to musical tastes, as though you had to stake a claim to a genre of music and stick to it. I found this very distressing - because I loved at least some of all of these. I'm ashamed to admit it - but peer pressure caused me to bypass purchasing certain records/artists at the time. (At least openly.) I don't think it was until I was in my 20's that I said '**** all of that nonsense' and let the music do the driving. If the music moves me - then I don't care what anybody thinks.

The flip side of that scenario is that it prompted me to go seek out the more obscure great music that was out there and always keep my ears open to new artists I'd never heard of. (I say 'obscure' in a relative sense to where I grew up.) The thought being that nobody could judge me if they hadn't heard of the band.

I almost feel guilty about what a Josh Homme fanboy I've become. My phone has music from 4 projects of his on there. If I ever see him in concert, I may tear up.
