Peace
Having watched about a million classes and sparring matches at my son's Dojo, I have a great deal of respect for the damage that can be done with just one or two blows from a hand. If anyone in my son's class is sitting on someone's chest with the intent of doing harm, no one is getting up after the first blow. Of course he could also disarm me easily, but I would feel the pistol was my only chance of survival. I'm also female and little, so I feel my chances of getting up off the ground would be slim to none in a situation like that. I know some self defense techniques, but I doubt my ability to get out of that scenario. If I were carrying a weapon, I would know how to use it. I would try to get the gun out and shoot in one motion. I wouldn't have just shot once, though, I would have emptied the gun.I don't think one 'thinks through' their options in these cases - they just react. But in imagining a scenario like this - for me personally - I'm not going for the gun unless I know with certainty that I can get to the weapon - point and shoot it. I'm not going to go for it in a close quarters struggle. I have more confidence in my ability to get out of a physical conflict than I do about being dexterous enough to draw a holstered weapon and shoot it while enduring blows to the head, laying on the ground. The bullet would have a good chance of finding me as well as my target. My goal would be to stop or interrupt the blows and get off of the ground first.
