We learnt in school that the Viking raids began with the Lindisfarne incident in 793, though I think I may have read more recently that they started earlier, which is also what this map says.
Also didn't realise the Byzantine empire at one point included all of North Africa's Mediterranean coast.
It's a shame a couple of the interesting events are partly off-map such as Alexander's empire and those of his generals.
