Vegan Christmas Pudding In a Bowl

^^^ Indian Summer, mince meat pies were something my family always had during the holidays. It's basically a pie filling made mostly of dried fruits (raisins, apples, and traditionally stuff like suet or dried beef), sugar, and very heavily spiced with cinnamon, cloves, I think allspice, maybe ginger... This was before my vegetarian days, although I might have had some before I learned that it actually contains meat- we just called them "mince pies". You can't taste the meat- it's really all about the fruit, sugar, and spices- so I don't know what the point of adding flesh is. I've had vegan mince pies since then and they're every bit as good as I remember our holiday pies being.

Anyhow. The stuff would go great with ice cream.

Mincemeat and mince pies date back to the Middle ages. The modern version does not contain flesh but dried fruit, spices, muscovado sugar and alcohol. You are right that the vegan version tastes just as good as the classic version that contains suet.

We always used NoneSuch for our mince pies. It came in a little carton- a very dry brick of solid dried fruit, spices, and sugar. You had to add water to it (in addition to the extras we used).

ETA: @shyvas The recipe for the mincemeat you used (in your post from September 24, 2014) sounds like it would taste amazing.

We never had mincemeat pies as kids, but at Thanksgiving when I was older, at my sister-in-law's parents' house, we had the kind with ground meat in them. I didn't really like them, but I think I would like the meatless one. Her parents were from Canada, so I'm thinking maybe it was a French-Canadian version.

Similar...it was a different brand. I think it was something like None such? Not even sure if it was vegan or not. It was way before I even knew what vegan was.

None Such definitely had/has beef. My grandmother always had the small box of condensed mincemeat on the shelf and only made it at Christmas. I took the box after she died. I was vegetarian then, and didn't look at it till the holidays came. First time I realized it had meat.
None Such still has beef, both the box and jar

Yes...the box! That's what I remember.

I've never seen boxed minced beef with fruit. It must be an American speciality. Anyway, the above recipe is for sure, a modern version called mincemeat (contains only dried fruit and spices) and has no flesh!

Indeed, it's delicious but does require quite a lengthy cooking time. Shop bought ones aren't too bad and I usually like to add some finely chopped sauteed apples to the mixture.

I think the beef in the nonesuch is flavoring. There were never bits of meat in the cookies my mom made.

(loud, deep female voice) WHEEERRRRE'S THE BEEF?? (/loud, deep female voice) For anyone who doesn't get this- it's from an OLD commercial a hamburger chain did. I forget which one, but I don't think it was McDonald's.
Wendy's lol
