I'm a huge fan of audiobooks. I work alone so I always listen to a story on my iPod to keep me amused. I have an Audible subcription and I buy stuff from iTunes if it's cheaper there, which it occasionally is.

At the moment I'm listening to Perfume by Patrick Suskind for about the 100th time. It so well written and the narration is perfect.

I love audiobooks! I listen to them on my iPod when I'm at work. I usually check out books on cd from the library, and put them into my iTunes that way.

I wish I could like audiobooks. For some reason I just can't focus on the audio, then I forget what was just said and I have to rewind to try to find where I was last paying attention. I do much better with the written word. It stays put while my mind wanders and is still there when I come back to reality. ADD maybe. :p But audiobooks would be crazy convenient so it sucks :(

I'm with Fyvel. I can never seem to focus on audiobooks. It would be nice if I could because it would mix things up when I'm working in lab...

Not that I rejoice in your ability to not be able to focus on them either, but it is nice to know I'm not the only one!

I honestly read more now with my ears than I do with my eyes. I've listened to over 60 audiobooks over the past couple of years. Between exercising and driving back and forth to RAL and art class, I get in a lot of listening time. Simon Vance is my favorite narrator. He narrated the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy and I just finished "Bring up the Bodies" by Hilary Mantel. I LOVE his voice!

Poppy, were you the one saying the running to audiobooks is nice? I still want to try that...

I have that experience sometimes. Sometimes it means the narration is not good or the book is not good, but my mind wanders when I do all sorts of things so I think it's just normal. Perhaps start with short stories and see if you do better? I like this one: http://www.audible.co.uk/pd?asin=B004EW2VPC

I'm with Poppy, I listen more than I read now. Often I have 6 hours solid reading at work so I tend to go for long audiobooks, like The Woman in White which was 22 hours long!

That's an interesting thought. I have listened to podcasts in the past and never really had trouble focusing on them. I usually listened to them while running on the treadmill at the gym so I had very little to distract me. Maybe I will try that with audiobooks/short stories :)

I love the idea of running while listening to audio books. I am looking to start it up so thats a good motivator. The one downside to having a car now is I dont get to read for like 3 hours a day on public transport, I miss reading as much.

I love audio books but have a hard time finding them free (whats the rule on er, discussion about freebie obtaining, here?). Part of the problem is the only cheap audiobook website is Audibles and it's not compatible with every MP3 player. I finally got myself a Philips MP3 player that takes audibles, then couldnt figure out what I wanted to download haha. Today I discovered the stupid crappy MP3 player has had some kind of software death and won't turn on, argh. Otherwise this thread would've inspired me :(

I have got some free audiobooks from the, er, normal channels that one would acquire illegal audio files. But I prefer to pay for them because, unlike music, they don't have concerts and things to make money on and I'm worried that if they don't make enough money, people will just stop producing them.

On Audible you can download anything as an mp3, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to put those on any mp3 player? In any case you can get a free trial there, download an audiobook for free and see if it works. If it doesn't, just cancel your membership and you haven't lost any money :)

Alas, Audible uses copyright protection which means only certain devices are compatible with it http://www.audible.co.uk/dc . Im guessing most people use iPods so dont notice the issue. I wouldn't have a prbolem paying audible fees, but audio books are so expensive to buy from other websites, up to £30 a pop for some that I've seen! Thats why I figured I'd either get an audible compatible MP3 player or just stick to attempting to find them free. My MP3 player actually came with a free Audible trial I need to activate once I get it working again.

Although I have never used it, our public library has audiobooks on it's website that you can download for something like 30 days.

I like audio books and listen to them whenever I can in the car, exercising usually on long walks, ect...

peace, love and rain-ey days:)

Oh god. I'm getting so old and out of it. I thought audible books still came on cds! I was wondering where you guys were finding them since I haven't seen any audio cds in forever. :(

I just got into audio books like a month ago and I love them. I listen while driving and while playing computer games (Diablo 3). It makes gaming feel like less of a waste of time when I'm also listening to a book on history or philosophy or something.

They do, I still have some CDs!

Yes! I always listen to one when I'm gaming because game sounds annoy me.
