Veganism is a philosophy and lifestyle that avoids using animals and animal products for food, clothing and other purposes. Adherents to veganism commit to the abstention from consumption or use of animal products, including meat, fish, and poultry, animal gelatin, honey, eggs and dairy products, as well as articles made of silk, fur, wool, bone, leather, feathers, pearls, nacre, coral, sponges and other materials of animal origin. Vegans also avoid products that have been tested on animals. People become vegans for a variety of reasons, including ethical concerns for animal rights or the environment, as well as more personal reasons such as perceived health benefits and spiritual or religious concerns.

Sponge, a simple, aquatic animal that looks like a plant. The term is also used for the skeleton of certain types of these animals; the skeleton soaks up fluid easily. Most sponges live in warm water at shallow depths, although sponges are found in all oceans at various depths. There are also species of sponges that live in freshwater. Sponges usually occur in colonies. When young, they attach themselves to rocks, corals, shells, or other submerged objects. Some species live on sand or mud bottoms.

Huh! I did not know that. (Or at least I don't remember knowing that, although it's possible I could have at one time. I do have a vague recollection of a discussion about how synthetic sponges were ok to use, but natural ones weren't.)

It appears that loofah is a plant, although it's sometimes called a loofah sponge.

Yes. Loofahs are vegan.

I live near a place, Tarpon Springs, where they still dive for live sponges.
