The Unpopular Question Thread.

Is it an acceptable reason for wanting to get a new job that I've been with the same company for more than a decade and it's awkward when someone with whom I had interactions at some point in time now runs into me and goes "hi I.S., how are you?" and I can't always immediately remember their names? 🤔

I agree about names being given in weird ways. I have my own question, why are we not using maternal lineage names? There is a whole side of all our relations that we are not connected by name with, for not wanting mothers to pass on a name of inheritance. I don't think that is justified, I did take on a maternal lineage name myself, based on a maternal ancestor, that is, going back through mothers, in this case five mothers ago.

@FredVegrox Lately I've been seriously thinking about changing my middle name to my mother's maiden surname. This could conceivably get complicated, depending on how far back I want to go-or even COULD go: Alex Haley did a great job of tracing his ancestry in "Roots", but eventually I'd get to a point where I couldn't go back any further. But since both my mother and maternal grandmother were okay with their last name, I'd be okay with using it.

What a cool idea.

I am serious about this, there could be such change to use of maternal lineage names, it would be sensible with being connected by name with more who we are related to by lineage. But besides myself taking the name of a maternal ancestor legally, I don't see there is a movement now for this, with any others doing that. There is call for this. Even Tom's approach is a good step in that direction. And it is mothers, not myself, who would be enabled from this to pass on their name, biologically based, that can continue to further descendants. Males already have paternal lineage names they pass on anyway, with this doing something women don't get to do. So I have a group on Facebook to promote it, but I see more must happen, and it seems to be beyond me. What is wrong for this to not be a movement?

I am glad for likes, showing some amount of agreement to be sure. But what I want for this is a movement. It should be, and it is not about me. It is about all mothers, and we all have mothers. Who will join for being part of such a movement or be behind such a movement. It would be a justice movement, as veganism itself is a justice movement, actually.

I hardly have gained any to have communication about this, the Facebook group I have for it is really small with just posts I put in it. I see it is likely that I am here before my time with speaking for this. The change to this must come about, I am old though and would not just be remembered for what I said, unless I keep speaking for it and much more than I have done. Carnism will be remembered as a part of a barbaric practice that continued through thousands of years of civilization. I see there will be that time, where our time will be recalled as such a patriarchal society that people only shared a name with relatives through their paternal ancestry and relatives through their maternal ancestry never mattered that much. I want others to see the problem with this and not just stay with such backwards notions, which can't last but we should change from it sooner than it would with none among us doing anything about it.

I don't know if I'm understanding correctly but many women are not changing their names when they get married...or they are at least hyphenating them.

As far as getting a movement going, us older folks are not going to be here. I feel like it's the younger people that need to be involved in making the changes that they want to see. Maybe we could give it a jump start but right now, the US is in the middle of such a dumpster fire that this particular issue would not be a priority for me. But I say go for...keep putting it out there...a little spark is all you need sometimes. Time will tell if it catches on or dies out. Sadly I don't think I'll be around to see much come of it. Change takes way too long.

And maybe I'm completely off the mark. 🤷🏻‍♀️
