Substitutes for Common Cravings

I used to crave liver (!) when I first became vegetarian and I thought it was related to an iron deficiency.

Is it the taste you are craving, or do you think you just need more B12? If it's the flavor, perhaps a grilled portabella burger would be a good sub. Maybe sprinkle some nutritional yeast on for the vitamins.

Well maybe having the taste can fool my body a bit ;) So I will try that :)

I missed my mom's lemon icebox pie. One day I decided to take the recipe apart and found that coconut milk with a little sugar and corn starch could be cooked down to mimic sweetened condensed milk. To this I added lemon juice and zest and a can of lemon pie filling. It set beautifully and the end result was actually better than Mom's.

Seafood!!! Gets me every time I'm pregnant!! Specifically crab, lobster, fish and chips and seafood salad.

I sometimes crave Steak really badly (has to do with a serious b12 deficieny due to my IBS), anyone found anything that solves that?

Have you tried sublingual B12 tablets? I have trouble absorbing B12 too, but have had great success with the sublinguals.

I aslo am really craving prawns/shrimp and squid. I used to have a seafood meal every Friday evening and really do miss it !!

I can't think of any substitute and really hate all that seaweed stuff !:???:

Crispy black pudding with lingonberry jam.

Or as we Swedish folks call it, Blodpudding med lingonsylt.

I miss some cheeses like brie, smoked cheese, cottage cheese etc....but I don't mind waiting for a good vegan sub.

I have made some fairy good vegan quiches, but I am a lazy about cooking, plus I live on my own and end up eating the whole thing, which isn't good for my weight....It would be nice to be able to just buy them at Tesco.

I tried to make a fake cottage cheese once with tofu, and N.yeast.......didn't really work. I think brie would be a hard one to imitate without getting into the chemistry.

oh yeah, Wotsits; I used to those things.

I got some Tings from the US a few years ago, and they were nice, but not quite as good...now I want some Tings....

Cheesy crisps. Are there any good vegan substitutes?
There are those Pirates Booty "Tings", well they're like nutritional yeast Cheetos- not potato chips (crisps?)
Not enough flavor, and I don't remember them having the right texture.
Vegan Cheetos I'd really like! I would think dried Daiya pepper jack would be just right!

Lately, for no particular reason, every time I see licorice all sorts in the store, I crave them. Sadly, all the brands I find are made with gelatin as a binder for the coconut part. Does anyone know a vegan option that exists?

You can fry tofu in vegan batter but I don't know if it tastes like fish. I still crave fish occasionally even after 19 years! Tuna was one of the last things I gave up.
I like to substitute chick peas (garbanzos) for tuna in my tuna salad sandwiches. It's not quite the same but it's a good substitute.

"Tuna" salad ingredients: onion, diced small - celery, diced small - dill relish - squirt of yellow prepared mustard - mayonnaise - ground black pepper, to taste - chick peas, cooked, slightly mashed. Occasionally I'll also add some diced green bell pepper.

I also like to have this in a fried sandwich w/ a tomato slice (like a toasted cheese).

Darrels Australian soft liquorice tastes fabulous. I know that the 5 flavours are Vegetarian but you would have to check the colour list.

I have seen a licorice in the shops called Panda Licorice or something. It seemed to be vegan. Im not sure where it is made though. It was in health food shops.

Here it is. It says it is from Finland. Go Finland!

http://internaturalfoods.com/brands/panda.html but it may need to be ordered over the web if not in health food stores.
