FOX BROADCASTING COMPANY AND NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL ANNOUNCE GLOBAL SERIES PREMIERE OF HIGHLY ANTICIPATED NEW SERIES "COSMOS: A SPACETIME ODYSSEY"

COSMOS Set To Premiere Sunday, March 9, on FOX and Monday, March 10, on the National Geographic Channel

Series to Launch Globally on National Geographic Channels International Monday, March 10

Fox Broadcasting Company (FOX) and National Geographic Channel (NGC) announced today the global series premiere of COSMOS: A SPACETIME ODYSSEY, the thrilling new 13-part series from executive producer/writer Ann Druyan and executive producer Seth MacFarlane (FAMILY GUY, "Ted"). The highly anticipated series will premiere in the U.S. on Sunday, March 9 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX, and encore with all-new bonus footage and behind-the-scenes content on the National Geographic Channel (NGC) Monday, March 10 (10:00-11:00 PM ET/PT).

COSMOS: A SPACETIME ODYSSEY will also premiere globally around the world on the National Geographic Channels in 170 countries and 45 languages and Monday, March 10 on Nat Geo MUNDO in the U.S.

More than three decades after the debut of "Cosmos: A Personal Voyage," Carl Sagan's stunning and iconic exploration of the universe as revealed by science, MacFarlane has teamed with Sagan's original creative collaborators - writer/executive producer Druyan and co-writer, astronomer Steven Soter - to conceive the 13-part series that will serve as a successor to the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning original series.

COSMOS: A SPACETIME ODYSSEY is hosted by renowned astrophysicist Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson. As with the legendary original series, the new COSMOS is the saga of how we discovered the laws of nature and found our coordinates in space and time. The series brings to life never-before-told stories of the heroic quest for knowledge, transporting viewers to new worlds and across the universe for a vision of the cosmos on the grandest - and the smallest - scale.

The series invents new modes of scientific storytelling to reveal the grandeur of the universe and re-invent celebrated elements of the original series, including the Cosmic Calendar and the Ship of the Imagination. The most profound scientific concepts are presented with stunning clarity, uniting skepticism and wonder, and weaving rigorous science with the emotional and spiritual into a transcendent experience.

COSMOS: A SPACETIME ODYSSEY is produced by Cosmos Studios, the Ithaca, NY-based company Ann Druyan co-founded in 2000, and Fuzzy Door Productions, MacFarlane's company. Druyan and Steven Soter are the series' writers. Druyan, MacFarlane, Cosmos Studios President Mitchell Cannold and Brannon Braga (the "Star Trek" franchise, "24") will executive-produce the series. It's here! :starshower: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmos:_A_Spacetime_Odyssey

I don't watch TWD so I'll be watching Cosmos. ABC is premiering a new series (following a new episode of OUAT) opposite Cosmos, so I'll check that out on Video on Demand later. There is also a new season of Long Island Medium premiering opposite on TLC, but that will be repeated at 11 pm, so I'll watch it then.

And then later in the month, Lifetime premieres the final season of Drop Dead Diva on Sunday nights. *collapses in anguish*

Once upon a Time, there was never anything airing on Sunday nights to interest me. Now there are way too many things airing on Sunday nights and I have to find the time to watch them all. :fp:

I should mention that NatGeo will be airing repeats of each episode the day after Fox airs them, and with extra content, so for anyone who has NatGeo, that's a good option.

I liked the premiere episode! I thought it was really good. I think Carl Sagan would be very pleased with it. If the first episode is any indication, we're in for an amazing and wild ride.

Apparently a Fox affiliate in Oklahoma cut 15 seconds out of the first episode pertaining to evolution. But there is going to be a lot of discussion of evolution in coming episodes, so they are probably going to do a lot more chopping. Thankfully this is the era of the internet, so hopefully the series can be viewed in full on the internet.

I've watched a number of episodes so far. The majority of the content seems very basic. The kind of stuff that kids learn in 4th grade.

I really wish TV shows in general would stop trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

I think you're missing the point. There are a lot of adults out there in America who don't actually know the basic stuff they were supposed to learn in 4th grade. Or they "think" they know science but have it all wrong. The anti-science movement in the US has become more and more pervasive and toxic since the original Cosmos aired. There's even a new "documentary" coming that claims that the sun revolves around the earth.

There are also a lot more young people in the US who were home-schooled, and they were not taught basic science because their parents are Christians who don't want their kids learning about evolution and other basic science. They were probably taught "creationist" science, which we know is ******** because it's religion, not science.

I share your disdain for TV that appeals to the lowest common denominator, but in this case, it's actually necessary. You can't explain more complicated science to viewers who don't even get basic science. And not surprisingly, the creationist nuts hate the new version of Cosmos precisely because it contradicts their religious views. At least the series gets the basic science out there for viewers to think about.
