The researchers fired X-rays from the PETRA III accelerator at a molecule of hydrogen (H2), which is made up of two protons and two electrons.
I've been there :) I work at a similar facility and we collaborate with DESY on some software projects.

This sounds like interesting research. Maybe it will make it possible to better observe/understand molecular mechanisms such as how certain molecules bind to proteins. This is important to understand how diseases work and how drugs can be developed to "sabotage" these mechanisms.
