WASHINGTON (January 7, 2026) -The Trump administration has released sweeping new Dietary Guidelines for Americans that reflect Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s growing influence over the nation’s food policy.

The new guidance urges Americans to avoid ultra-processed foods and artificial sweeteners, while explicitly endorsing foods long discouraged by nutrition experts, including whole milk, butter, beef tallow, and red meat.

I swear, that guy is so dangerous. This whole administration ... every day it gets worse.

eat protein and dairy not a great recommendation

as a health recommendation only, ignoring ethical and environmental concerns sadly, you could do worse

He's an F***ing moron. Unfortunately, millions will follow his guidelines.
only if they are already doing it already. I can't believe that many people pay much attention to what the government say. This will have some impact, but not huge. If they really want to change eating habits, they could try large taxes and subsidies otherwise people are going to eat whatever the heck they feel like most of the time

I think it's horrible! They've pretty much reversed what we had and indicate meat dairy and eggs are a necessary components. Saturated fats from meat and full fat dairy are promoted. I guess at least they aren't suggesting a carnivore diet, but it completely dismisses a vegetarian diet as acceptable.
I'm actually seeing beef tallow on grocery shelves now, bone broth is everywhere. No warnings of the known carcinogens created by grilling
What really struck me was the comment on the rump administration making healthy foods both available and affordable :hmm:

Yeah, it's pretty bad:

Pay careful attention to potential nutrient gaps
when consuming a vegetarian or vegan diet.
Vegetarian diets often fall short in vitamins D
and E, choline, and iron, whereas vegan diets
show broader shortfalls in vitamins A, D, E, B6,
and B12; riboflavin; niacin; choline; calcium; iron;
magnesium; phosphorus; potassium; zinc; and
protein. Monitor nutrient status periodically,
especially for iron, vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium,
and iodine.


In other words: vegan diets "show broader shortfalls" in pretty much damn near everything. It's a miracle I'm so damned healthy and fit.
 
I was skeptical of recommendations of no more10% saturated fats when they're calling for 3 servings of whole fat dairy in addition to meats. Math doesn't math.
Can't post links now, but look up the names of the scientific reviewers of this, they are part of beef, pork and dairy councils
 
On the whole I'm not as disturbed by the new guidelines as I was initially. Clearly it's an attempt to bolster US animal ag, but beyond that there are some good underlying themes. For example, protein - while focused on meat - also encourages eating plant-sourced protein such as "beans, peas, lentils, legumes, nuts, seeds, and soy". There is a strong focus on fruit and veg, while the broader urging is to move away from highly processed foods and refined carbs, all good advice. The grains section, while seeming to take the focus off them, actually encourages 2-4 serves per day of fiber rich whole grains. And to top it all off the exact same recommendation to limit saturated fat to 10% of calories or less remains. It's almost like the panel still managed to keep closer to where appropriate evidence-based guidelines should be except RFK drew the pyramid.

That said, the focus on meat is annoying and frustrating but realistically that's not so different when you read the guidelines themselves and the inclusion of dairy perhaps reflects recent research that suggests milk and fermented products such as yogurt etc are actually net positive for good health.

The main disappointment is that at face value, the guidelines seem to be encouraging people not to worry about saturated fat and chow down on as much meat as they like, even though that is not the actual message. This seems to give the OK to some unhealthy eating patterns because most folk are not gonna read the actual guidelines themselves and just listen to RFK approving eating tons of meat.

Mic the Vegan has a good video out pointing to the panel make-up as being loaded by industry influence, which is sad. One commenter suggested the lesser focus on foods like oats may reflect that the USA imports oats rather than producing much themselves so that aligns with President Trump's preferences to protect American industry.

There are no new good parts--the plant proteins, fruits and veg, grains--they haven't changed
What is new, and very significant, is the focus on meats-red meats-dairy-full fat dairy, and a focus on saturated fats.

I was shopping at the regular grocery and checked on the meatless section. Different varieties of bone broth, and tallow were next to them, along with buckets of chitterlings . I can't remember when I saw chitterlings there :yuck:

Mark my words, we'll be seeing more products with animal products that aren't needed

Michelle Obama advocated for better nutrition all the way to revamping school lunch programs doing away with junk foods and pop machines. The repukes went crazy rebuking her for taking away their right to have junk foods. Destroying her White House garden was one of the first things melania did

I find the whole nutrition thing intriguing, even confusing. Decades of research agree that something like a Med diet eating pattern offers the greatest benefit at the population level. It's consistently shown that for modern people in industrialised countries, that diet works well and that too much red meat, processed meat and sat fat are counter-productive to long term health. Yet there is this constant push from so many to denigrate that in favour of often meat heavy diets. I even see many commenters arguing that the old guidelines encouraged people to eat too much refined carbs and sugar, which of course they never did. The sort of popular wisdom now seems to be that the government was trying to harm everyone and was in cahoots with the food industry to get every to eat carbs. Plucky RFK though has saved us.

Of course that is largely a US-based view, but I am seeing it even here in Australia now. I joined a carnivore group on FB recently and sadly the people in that group reflect all of that. They also promote so many bizarre conspiracy theories, including being deeply sceptical of "germ theory"! It's downright weird. And sad, I think.
