Older vegans

Hello,
I’m wondering if there are vegans over 60 in this community. I don’t know a lot of older vegans and I’m curious to hear about their day to day life
Lisa
Hello and welcome @flowergirl0298
Yep, there are a few of us here who are 60 or older…
In August I will be 70…
It’s been a bit more than 30 years since I went Vegan and my GP always comments on how good my blood tests are!
My only health issues are a bit of arthritis and my weight…
The weight only became an issue after my husband died - my diet is fairly healthy, but between anxiety and hormones as well as a bit too much Vegan organic white wine I am many kilos heavier than I would like…
Looking forward to hearing more from you Lisa…
All the best from,
Robin

P.S. I am also a flower girl - I used to be a professional gardener
Wondering how you chose your username?

Hi Robin,
I’m 65 and been vegetarian since my twenties and vegan for about 10 years. I can relate to you a lot! I think most people think vegans eat only vegetables 😂 I have always struggled with over eating and it’s no different now, only that nothing I eat deprives an animal of its life or dignity- and yes I like Sauvignon Blanc a bit too occasionally🤭
It’s such a coincidence that you are a gardener as I am a horticulturist and still working in a garden centre. I’ve always been interested in fruit veg and herb plants and I’m involved in a community garden where we are establishing a food forest at the moment.
Apart from that I have been involved in animal rights and a member of the ‘animal justice party’ and foster cats and feed colony cats too.
I have 5 grandchildren whom i adore and my life is pretty much kids, plants and animals.
It’s so nice to know there is similar people out there as I really don’t socialise much anymore.
Lisa😀

I just turned 71. I have been vegan for over 25 years. Presently I'm in good health. Good weight. Up. until about a year ago I was very proud that I wasn't on Any prescription medicine. But for a while I'm taking thyroid medication. Not sure if it's doing any good. Also discovered that my iron reserves are low and I now take a special kind of iron supplement. Oh and I might have vascular degeneration so I take a special vitamin to prevent that. B12, D, and omegas., too. I finally bought one of those pill cases to help keep track of all of them
I go to the gym at least once a week. mostly it's the elliptical for the time it takes to watch a tv show. then some strength training.
I go hiking for 4 -5 miles at least once a week.
And I go out dancing at least once a week. I'm an old deadhead and seems there is no shortage of Jam bands around here. And during the summer there are lots of free outdoor concerts, I am tired of 80s dance bands and try for a variety of music and venues.
Tomorrow I'm going to take a pickleball lesson.

Thank you all for sharing, loving hearing about other vegan’s lifestyles. I concentrate on getting good plant iron supplies and take a b vitamin daily but moving is so important as we age isn’t it. I live on tofu, there is a lot of plant based alternatives to meat around but after trying them I find I prefer tofu or seitan.

I am 61 (62 later this month). 21 years vegetarian and 12 years vegan as of a couple of weeks ago. I lead a very healthy lifestyle apart from being a vegan - about 2 hours of exercise a day and a close watch on my weight. I play sports (volleyball, badminton, tennis, pickleball) with those younger and much younger than me. I still play in competitive 2 on 2 volleyball tournaments with my "young" (38-year-old) partner, including one this Sunday. My biggest regret in life is not being a vegan from birth.

My Partner is 68 and has been vegan for 10 years - he also was vegetarian for many years before that - he is a naughty vegan sometimes - like 1/4 packet potato crisps every day and a glass of wine a day and 2 chocolate covered macadamias but he is in tip top health - i am a nutritionist so i keep him well nutrified - He does have hereditary high blood pressure but we got that down 6 years ago by him reducing his crisp intake and giving up processed vegan foods like the bio cheese and some vegan salami he was eating - i also got him eating more potassium rich foods and he is fine - he had his bloods done recently - everything perfect. I am 56 - i don't have my bloods done and so far i am super healthy - i have a lot of energy- i do suffer from peridontitis as a result of menopause but am getting that sorted too -

I am writing a vegan nutrition course and if we eat healthy throughout our lives we have got a greater chance of a great health span than those who eat animal

Hi Flowergirl, and welcome to VF! I'm 65 and have been vegan since 2007 and vegetarian before that. I like to work out daily, and I think that plus my efforts to eat a well-balanced vegan diet (I do have my junk food moments, lol) give me plenty of energy. I love music and attend as many concerts as I can. I love that I can still rock out (arms in the air waving, dancing, etc.) at my age. I do have some arthritis in my toes, but it hasn't stopped me from moving!
