Hello. This is a bit lengthy topic, but i covered some details to give you better context of why my concerns... concern me.

I'm not really new to vegan stuff, started in 2010 as simple vegetarian with some exceptions but relatively soon moved to vegan and later even raw food eating, but couple years later moved back to just vegan. Had various chats and real life talks with few other vegans too back then, but when things got settled down and vegan stuff became just normal life style, eventually connections got away. Since then i don't talk with other vegans simply because i don't really meet them. Eventually i reached some peak of values where i even don't kill insects randomly, so if i find a mosquito or spider in my room, i prefer to catch them into some jar and then release outside. I'm a freelancer and i even had to deny some clients who turned out to be into hunting stuff, i simply didn't accept money and task from them, even if i was in need. Moreover, even if my parents ask to buy ice cream or milk for them, i usually try to avoid that. Absurd? Or extreme veganism? :) heh i don't know, but felt discomfortable to break settled down values. But once i had to make some exception.. i have high interest in sport RC helicopters, which are not drones, but quite large and sport capable machines. I started with small RC helis and it was fine, however, when i launched into the sky my first big RC heli, after landing i noticed a lot of blood stains on the helicopter blades. Felt like my inner world fell apart, because my passion which was making my life more interesting, turned out to be a real killer, killer of insects who fly in the air. I had some big dilemma, should i give up on that hobby, or should i put my personal interest over life of random insects and bugs? Heh, eventually i was able to calm myself down, i tried to imagine how birds eat bugs, and compare to how i don't kill bugs on purpose, it's just randomly happens during my activity. However, i still felt that i have responsibility for that activity, and if i would not fly, i would not make random killing. I even had to talk with ChatGPT about that issue. Eventually, i realized that in real world it is very hard to be ultimate vegan and i have to give up some positions.. i had to tell myself that i already do a great job in vegan stuff, so maybe this case could be an exception because helicopters hobby was very important and personal for me at the moment. So yes, i kept flying and eventually stopped caring about randomly slashed bugs. Guess my vegan brain got adapted to it.

The story does not end on this. One of my main activities is art, i digitally draw cute toon-style art, i have my own audience which is large enough to make some demand for my art. I was doing that for 5-7 years already, but only recently i got high interest in printing my own work, making merch, posters, and sell it. This idea was like a new sparkle for me. Spent time on searching info and already decided with what kind of professional inkjet printer i will go. But, couple days ago i 'accidently' learned that most of inks contain animal-based reagents, even art paper itself have animal reagents. Wow, man, that was another inner world shattering for a moment. But if i was able to relatively fast agree to keep flying helicopters despite bugs being killed, the situation with inks is not easier, it feels even harder to make another exception. As Google assured me, there may be third party vegan-friendly inks but they most likely will not fit the printer i want to use. I heard of vegan printing services, but that's not really an option for me, because i want to produce by myself. Man, why nowadays it's so hard to be a vegan.. i didn't think that even in printing cute art i will have to fight strong dilemma and principles. I just want to professionally print cute art :( There is an unconfirmed claim that some Epson printer inks do not have animal reagents, but their inks set specializes more on cold colors like blue and purple, while the printer from other brand i want, produces better warm tones like orange and red, and my drawings have a lot of warm tones. Potentially i could get Epson printer and get not so vivid arts, but my whole point of printing was to achieve vivid and bright warm colors on professional level.. so picking Epson kinda kills my original idea, however it potentially solves the dilemma of animal particles in inks (of course if that claim was not fake). I could potentially make another exception and just buy what i wanted, but then not sure how i can be able to tolerate the idea that the cute vivid toon print i handle in my hands, contains dead animals particles. What is that, another extreme veganism? Guys i don't know what to do with this. Sometimes feels it would be easier to care less and just do what i want. But obviously it damages vegan values and makes me a hypocrite.

P.S. notice that i'm not a minor vegan who started just year ago or so.. my experience goes since 2010 year.. so hopefully it gives you the idea why it's hard to break some borders

Hello there @BadVegan … I commend You on your desire to Be as Vegan as possible… Your caring about the Insects is particularly inspiring - it seems to me that they are Often ignored… Unfortunately in our daily lives we do Harm to many insects without meaning to…

Regarding the ink cartridge's - it seems to me that this is just another issue of How difficult it Is to live Vegan in this Very non Vegan! If there are practical Vegan options that is Always my choice, however, sometimes that isn’t possible…
When it comes to food and clothing I can Always find something that is Vegan, for other things though often times I might be inadvertently using something that is not Vegan without being aware of it… In the case of the ink cartridge’s only You can decide which ones to use… My late husband was an Artist - and also Vegan - some of the products that he used may Not have been Vegan, we just tried to do the Best we could…

To me being as Vegan as possible, without making excuses for any lapse is what matters most…

I'm the dame with insects, I do my best but don't get upset if accidently squash one or am too rough with my "relocation" efforts. Nature is beautiful but also brutal, we can only do our best to be it's gentle side.

As for your art, if you have a following already maybe consider turning your art into NFT's? There are multiple blockchains out there tailored to creators of art and game assets. Its all digital and very eco-friendly/vegan. It can at least be a good way to find a new audience and expand your reach.

I wish you the best of luck!

Hi - we all accidentally kill things - just by walking around on planet Earth , we accidentally kill tiny microscopic insect beings under our feet .. Driving a car kills tiny insects , too .. etc..etc .. We always catch spiders and flies in the house to let them out , unharmed .. but every now and then the catching fails and the insect or spider is accidentally killed .. Flying in planes ... travelling in trains ... Even the very act of opening and closing a door can accidentally kill a small being .. etc.. etc .
You could really twist yourself in knots over this - but what l suggest is this -
You know in your heart what your core ethics are - you know what your intention is .. You know you are a caring person ..
So give yourself a break .. We can only do our best .. and maybe the cute art you wish to print could carry anti-cruelty messages ?
There's no score-board here - but if there was , it sounds to me like you would have 99 .5 % scores on the positive side ..

You are here on Earth with billions of other beings .. You try very hard not to cause harm to any of them .. That is admirable .. That is living an ethical life .. Thank you for being the kind of human who lives like this .
But please relax and be kind to yourself , too .
Vegan hugs from Ruthie x

Hello people, and thank you for the replies. I appreciate each reply of you. It's nice to hear from other vegans after years of not interacting with vegans, hah. Yes i learned to respect any life form, even insects. Once i even felt very guilty when i accidently stepped onto a snail. However, it was years ago. Nowadays i probably will not make a big deal of it, just would feel 'pity' for a moment, then would say 'heh, it just happens, unintented', because otherwise i would start to hurt my own mental health if care way too much. I learned that eventually. Sadly this world is originally designed to be cruel and rude, look, even animals kill and eat each other.. does it mean that we humans should do the same? No, i believe we can and should do better, even if it goes against the Nature itself.

Yes i believe it is quite inspiring to care so much about various stuff and even bugs. But in my current situation feels like i nearly reached some peak of care where it actually started to rather feel discomfortable to live. Even 'respecting' opinions of other non-vegans who decide to keep eating animals, was making me feel very disgusting and i thought if i should stop talking with such people, even if some of them are my old pals or clients. It's way too crazy to think that it's the norm for people to keep eating animals or killing other creatures. That's hard to bear. I felt like i don't belong this world, i'm alien to it.. so, eventually i just started to try care a bit less, otherwise it feels impossible to bear because care and demand would go further and deeper.

Speaking of printer inks, i was doing (or trying to do) some more researches in recent days, most of sources state that modern inkjet inks are rather synthetic, and stuff like crushed bugs and burned bones rather was or still is used in more artist-grade inks. However, for some reason it made cautious people to think that common mass production printer inks may contain this stuff too. I became afraid of it as well. Would be really bad to know that i support crushing bugs industry if i buy inks, but almost all sources i checked (even asked 3 different AIs - Google, ChatGPT, Grok) state that crushed bugs or burned bones are not stable enough resources for good grade modern printer inks. At the same time there are no official statemenents from Canon, and only one Canon-related source claimed that inks are not vegan. Now, probably nowadays people take the word 'vegan' too wide and start to think of 'green' or ecologic topic as well, not just about used animals. So maybe that statement of 'non-vegan' can be not clear? Because, i also contacted some paper manufactor who happened to be in contact with some person from Canon, and they claimed that Canon inks are fully synthetic or chemical, and don't contain any organic stuff (including animals). Sounds good, right? But at the same time the person who told me that, stated that she can't guarantee how true it is. Heh, again some grain of salt. So, currently it looks like they are most likely synthetic, but no 100% confirmation or claims of that. Of course also need to consider some risk that a customer support person can just lie and say 'no animals used' to make client buy their product. But maybe i'm just too paranoid and big companies don't really do that? I guess need to speak with professionals who work in chemistry industry which is related to printers, maybe they can assure us about modern printer inks tendencies. But i have no such contacts. If someone on this forum does, would be nice to hear from them.

Phew, that's some lengthy text here :)

UPDATE: actually, just recently i got an answer from Canon support, which clearly stated that they don't consider their inks vegan because inks can contain some animal products.. :( but again, i guess the key word is 'can', so maybe it's not the end of hope? Anyway, some controversy does exist as we can see. Closed source stated about inks being fully synthetic, while open source such as support claims about possibility to contain animal based products.

The SDS file (some chemistry stuff) related to the inks shows they use glycerin and glycol, and of course petrolium, but i found nothing insects related. Now, i guess glycols and glycerins are the least of two evils, because if they are based on animals, then probably as byproducts of already killed animal, so i guess if there would be no killing in the first place, then factories would use plant based sources. But with insects it's totally different - they are being crushed on purpose to get required reagents, which sounds way more bad to me. I sent further message to Canon, to see what they can say about insect reagents.

Hi again - l don't want to call you Badvegan - because you aren't ..
You say " You feel like you don't belong to this world ... " Well , welcome ! I have never felt like l belong to this strange world of humans who abuse other humans and non-humans , eat some animals while protecting others ( especially if they are deemed "cute" ) destroy the very foundations of what is the balance of nature ... etc.. etc.. I have always felt like an alien on the wrong planet - where sport is more important than providing shelter for other humans and food for hungry beings ... where torturing animals is considered sport ( rodeos etc..) and etc... l could go on and on ..

I've been called "weird" my whole life - but to me , the average human is the weird one ..
Embrace your difference - embrace not being average - l , for one , am very happy to be different ..

Wishing you a happy ethical life ..
Cheers from Ruthie x

Thank you :) yes i'm pretty sure i'm not alone in such terms, probably just not everyone are vocal about it. It's just sad fact which need to accept somehow and just keep living. You are quite right on the point about people being over-protective about some particular animals but at the same time happily consuming meat and milk. Annoying double standards.. but do dare to mention so to such people, and you will get a whole lecture from them.
