TV & Film Movie Lounge

Took a break from watching Olympic soccer this morning to watch TNT Jackson. 70s-era blaxploitation. Fun.

I really hated The Happening.:rofl:I kept laughing at bits that were supposed to be serious.

^The first time I saw it, I was like... "...are they serious? What the f..." because it seemed almost like a spoof of the b-movies or something like that, and that wasn't what I thought it was supposed to be. So I read up on it more and then watched it again a while later. I actually liked it much better in the second viewing.

But yeah, IMDB says "M. Night Shayamalan and several other filmmakers, when shooting the film, stated that it was supposed to be a throwback on the 1950s-'60s B-movies, like The Birds and The Invasion of the Body Snatchers. This can be seen on the "making of" feature on the DVD."

Speaking of b-movie spoofs, I caught the last 20 minutes or so of one called The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra. It came out back in 2001, and then the sequel came out in 2009.

So there's The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra; The Lost Skeleton Returns Again; then the guy who wrote those also did Trail of the Screaming Forehead.
Needless to say, I want to watch all of them. Those 20 minutes that I saw were ridiculously funny.

So you mean you didn't consider it a sad, emotional, life-changing moment when the girl killed herself on the phone after babbling something about mathematics?

:p

I didn't know that! It makes much more sense if you look at it that way.

I find it makes more sense to just buy the movies I am interested in rather than rent them or chance seeing it in theaters in most cases so last time I was at Best Buy I bought We Need To Talk About Kevin and wasn't disappointed.

The next one I want to see is Carnage

^^I love Tilda Swinton, and Kate Winslet so I really want to see both of those.

Without giving too much away, Kevin delves into the whole nature vs. nurture debate and exposes the taboo of what if the maternal instinct doesn't kick in during those crucial early years? As well as forcing the viewer to ask themself if the parents can or should be held culpable for the heinous act(s) of a child. It's artistically shot flip flipping between present to past from her point of view. It's raw and edgy. Tilda of course, is brilliant.

I watched the theatrical release of Donnie Darko (2001) tonight and loved it. I can't even explain why I loved it so much... it just spoke to my f-cked up side I guess. It isn't just a film that takes place in the 80's... it feels as though it were actually shot in the 80's and has that sort of feel to it. If you rent or download it, skip the director's cut which seeks to explain everything that is going on. I hate that. Watch the original, which leaves lots of intriguing questions unanswered.

I'm going to see what The Happening is like as it's on Film 4.
Oh god no... don't do it! The first five minutes were interesting but as soon as Mark Wahlberg speaks... it turns to ****.

M. Night Shamalyan needs to just retire at this point. He's totally lost it, god love him. The Sixth Sense was a fluke.

Just let it die.

I don't agree. I think The Sixth Sense, Signs, and The Village were all great movies.

Most of his other stuff is really, really bad though. Don't even get me started on The Last Airbender.

In descending order... you got it right. God bless your sweet heart.

To be fair, both Signs and The Village were only really so good because of their premises, and what scenarios were set up. Otherwise they don't make too much sense.

On the other hand, The Happening had a really crappy scenario to go along with the meh everything else, which made it not as good.

I suppose I'll let you slide on these... but what about Lady in the Water? Seriously???

I think I'm one of the few people that liked The Village. I haven't seen TLA, don't know if I want to.

In the last few months, I tried twice to get through the movie Tree of Life, and barely made it the second time. I just couldn't get into it.
