...based on the book by Yann Martel and directed by Ang Lee,
opens today.

First off, they pulled it off!
Ang Lee came through and translated the book to movie impressively and exceptionally well.

But before i get more into the movie, i need to address the pre-opening ads first.
It really bothered me that they were calling it "the new Avatar". Even though they were referring to the 3D technology, they shouldn't have used it in the ads because it sets up a comparison and while the two movies did share other things in common besides the 3D, Life of Pi stands alone. And now, unfortunately because of this comparison, i feel it's slipped into the "being overrated" category.

Newcomer Suraj Sharma is the perfect Pi. He's awesome and i look forward to seeing him act in more films.

They used some poetic license that added nothing to the movie, but was not so obnoxious as to make book purists cringe:
Pi's romance before he left India.

They left a few things out of the movie but i was glad they did:
Vegetarian Pi had to eat a lot of creatures to survive his ordeal and the one he utilized the most was the sea turtle. He also had to eat some meerkats along the way as well. Thankfully, they didn't show either of these happening.
They also left out a part where Pi goes blind for a few days and has, what i interpreted as, an illusion of another blind castaway pulling up his lifeboat alongside Pi's.

They did include the part where:
Pi has hallucinations and it's a very trippy moment with the 3D really coming into play to create an acid-like trip "down the rabbit hole", only in this case, it's down the ocean hole.

Saw it in 3D first so i could absorb the whole experience by myself without distractions and will see it again in 2D with my mom and others.

Here's the main song from the soundtrack, Pi's Lullaby:

Finally saw it last night. We made a night of it and went to a vegetarian Indian restaurant.
I completely agree about the romance, it was unnecessary. I would have preferred the part of the book when the religious leaders fought over him in the zoo. I also would have liked the blind part when he was talking to "RP". It is like they left out some of the comic relief from the book.

All in all it was pretty true to the book otherwise and a good movie.

Thats such a good idea!

I saw it in 3D and honestly didnt think it was worth it. Everyone I was with disagreed with me though! I enjoyed it. i've owned the book for years and never got round to reading it, whoops.

Thoroughly enjoyed this! I saw in both 2D and 3D - I did think that at least they used the 3D tastefully and not as overkill. It's been awhile since I read the book, but I thought it was pretty spot on. I did miss Pi hiding the cookies under his blanket towards the end during the interview with the Japanese ship owners. That part in the book really struck me.
