Has anyone done it?

I got summoned to do it in a few months. I'm looking for experiences and opinions other that "omg I'm so jealous you get 2 weeks off work!!!111". I'm trying to be enthusiastic but just failing miserably. Just seems like a massive faff/annoyance to me.

It is a bit of a faff but I actually found it extremely interesting. It's a life experience. I would've hated it if I'd got a horrible case though.

Just so you know, if it's something serious or upsetting, they ask you first whether you are willing to be part of the jury. So you're not going to end up part of a jury for a peadophile case or something without your consent.

Mind numbingly boring (drunk driving case), wasted an entire day of my life that I'll never, ever get back. I hope I never get called again. I suggest you do everything you can to get out of it. ;)

I'm glad you found it interesting Raggle. I think I will, it'll be good to see what really happens vs what happens on TV (my Mum is obsessed with crime dramas). But knowing my luck I'd be stuck with really boring cases (like Forster) or a really long case.

I mean, I would've probably found it interesting even with a 'boring' case. I just found the whole process interesting...seeing how everything works etc. It made me see the justice system in a different light.

Anyway, I hope it's an ok experience for you :)

Hi everyone, thought I'd report back since I just finished my duty. It was OK, I was on one case that lasted the full 2 weeks - there were talks of it spilling over to Monday but it didn't.

I found it quite interesting (obviously not allowed to say what it was about but it wasnt fraud or drunk driving or anything like that), but at the same time there was a LOT of waiting around. On the first Monday I wasnt called for a case so just had to sit there from 9am-4.30pm (managed to read a whole discworld novel in one go). I was finally put on one on Tuesday at 4 and was about to lose the will to live so I'm glad I got picked. There was a lot of going down to court, waiting around, going in listening to something for 15mins then being sent back upstairs. One day we were told to get there for 10, were then waiting around til 12.30 - to be told to come back at 2, came back at 2 to be told oh actually you can go home. Apparently this isn't normal the case just had a lot of legal stuff to figure out behind the scenes.

My advice would be to bring a book (that you dont mind reading for 8 hours in one go), and dont make any plans for the week after. There was one case they announced was going to last 3 weeks - if you couldnt do it tell them. However, this one they didnt expect to last as long as it did.

So yeah that was my brief non-disclosing summary. The ushers and staff were all soooo nice (even the security gaurds), and they made it as easy as possible. Phew! I wouldnt be too irritated if I was called to do it again, met some nice people.

Glad you had a generally positive experience, except for the waiting. That's what I hate most about jury duty because you're so stressed out about being picked, and then once you're on the jury it's not so bad.

Here in the US once the trial is officially over the jurors can talk about the case, as you know because there are reams of books by jurors from famous trials. Is it not the same in the UK? Are you required to keep your mouth shut even after it's done?

Yeah it was awful sitting there, I was scared to go for a wee (therefore drink) in case my name got called out. I actually got called out twice and went down to court, but what they do is over-call just in case a juror isnt suitable. So they'll call down 16 people and then 12 will be picked, and the rest of you go back upstairs. By the Tuesday I didnt care if I ended up on a 6 month long case as long as I bloody did something.

Youre not allowed to talk about it even when it's over. People have been imprisoned over putting things about a case on Facebook! I can appreciate not being allowed to discuss personal opinions expressed by jurors, but anyone from the public could just go sit in the gallery and watch so I dont get the total silence. It sounds mad to me the idea of a juror publishing a book!
