Depends on the intent. There was actually one famous Chinese general who landed his own troops in front of a city he wanted conquered, and then ordered then to burn the ships and send them out to sea. He thus backed his own men into a corner to give them no option except to capture the city.

In the battle for gay rights, you're right it might not be the best idea, but there isn't exactly a leader directing the battle trying to make sure it goes as tactically smooth as possible, so the best we can do is understand what is inevitable based on how things are progressing.
