I agree! It’s more of an angry face, like someone going “grrrrrrr”. But judging it in context when it’s used, I can always figure out the poster’s intent.

I go by what the icons look like. To me it's a grimace (or like I just hit my thumb with a hammer )

Agree. Any time I've typed : D it has come out as a big grin. I'm lazy and don't like looking up emojis.
