"SQUEAKS" FROM ELEPHANT HAVEN

When thinking back on our beginnings of establishing an elephant sanctuary in France an ancient Chinese proverb comes to mind – “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”.
As many of you know, our first and deliberate step was taken in 2013 when Tony and Sofie began looking for a parcel of land. Following an extensive search, a diverse terrain with potential for expansion was secured in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region (Limousin), in the Department of Haute Vienne, France. And this was just the beginning of the journey.

Since that time, a great deal of effort has been put into obtaining all the required permits and constructing fences and a barn to accommodate elephants.
In 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, we were finally ready to put out the welcome mat for up to three female elephants, as this is what our current permitting will allow.

As a result of our amazing supporters these many years, we have reached this stage in our journey and we have to say again how appreciative we are for each and every one of you.

And now that we have reached this point, many are wondering where our next steps will take us.

We continue building our network and relationships with other facilities that keep and house elephants throughout Europe as well as around the world.
As former zookeepers, we want to work collaboratively with others to share information, experiences and best practices in efforts to lead to better management, treatment and care for captive elephants throughout Europe – this could mean in their current environment or by offering retirement at EHEES.

Our philosophy is to work together and not against, to improve conditions for elephants without judging – and, at the heart of everything we are focused on the welfare of all elephants held in captivity.

Over the years, visiting and working at zoos and sanctuaries worldwide, meeting other people who are passionate about elephants, we have learned a great deal about these amazing sentient beings and our respect has grown with each encounter. We look forward to discovering more and more and further proving our commitment to these exceptional beings.

We are often contacted by concerned groups and individuals. We value the efforts of so many caring people and take great efforts to understand more about the unique situation of each elephant. To that end, we are committed to working respectfully with the individuals or organisations that have responsibility for the animals and often this means that we are not able to openly discuss our work.

As a result, we cannot say when the first elephant will arrive at EHEES but we are committed to providing a healthy environment with a high standard of care to every elephant that will come to live at EHEES.

Our journey, albeit slowed because of the global pandemic, remains and will always be to create a safe haven for elephants who count on us and to encourage others to recognize that our world needs elephants.

Our commitment is as strong as ever.
