The majority of donkeys in the UK are kept as pets. Moreover, there are 10 donkey sanctuaries in the UK where 8 000 are homed. Sadly, some are still used for donkey rides during the summer months on beaches. Many AR's activists campaign against these rides as donkeys are abused and used. If looked after, they can live up to the age of 40.
Charities do not promote animals being used in festive events. However, there are still some unscrupulous people that use them. The donkey sanctuary does tremendous work by educating people and rescuing them from abuse.

I would say that compared to some other countries, they have it easy as donkeys are the most used and abused animals in the world. Spana, is an international charity that care for some of the 42 million donkey worldwide that are used for transporting good, tourists and farmwork. Their lives are simply appalling due to low welfare standards in many countries.

This thread reminds me of a tragic event that took place a couple of weeks ago in France, where 2 donkeys were shot in a sanctuary. One survived and the other one lay agonising for hours before dying. They still don't know whether it was hunters (the season is ongoing) or neighbours.
